What is a senior bridge engineer?

Senior Bridge Engineers are highly experienced civil engineers who specialize in the design, analysis, construction, and maintenance of bridges and related structures. They often lead engineering teams on large infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with safety standards, regulations, and technical specifications. Their responsibilities typically include project management, supervising junior engineers, conducting site inspections, and solving complex engineering problems. Senior Bridge Engineers also collaborate closely with architects, contractors, and government agencies throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior bridge engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Bridge Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, a professional engineering (PE) license, and extensive experience in bridge design and analysis. Mastery of design software like AutoCAD, MicroStation, and structural analysis tools such as SAP2000 or MIDAS Civil is typically required, along with knowledge of relevant codes and standards. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you manage teams, coordinate with stakeholders, and deliver complex projects efficiently. These skills ensure that bridge projects are safe, cost-effective, and compliant with engineering standards.

What are some common challenges faced by senior bridge engineers when managing large infrastructure projects?

Senior Bridge Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating multidisciplinary teams, ensuring compliance with evolving safety and environmental regulations, and managing tight project timelines and budgets. Effective communication with stakeholders, including contractors, government agencies, and community representatives, is crucial for addressing unexpected issues and keeping projects on track. Additionally, staying updated on new materials and construction technologies can be essential for optimizing bridge design and longevity.

What is the difference between Senior Bridge Engineer vs Bridge Designer?

AspectSenior Bridge EngineerBridge Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Civil or Structural Engineering, often with design certifications
Work EnvironmentInvolved in project management, structural analysis, and overseeing constructionFocuses on conceptual and detailed design, drafting, and modeling
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, government agencies, construction companiesDesign firms, consulting agencies, architectural firms

While both roles involve bridge projects, Senior Bridge Engineers oversee entire projects, including analysis and construction management, whereas Bridge Designers primarily focus on creating detailed designs and plans. The roles often overlap in skills and certifications but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How much do senior bridge engineers make in the US?

Senior bridge engineers in the US typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and employer. They often hold professional engineering licenses and work on complex infrastructure projects requiring specialized skills in structural analysis and design.

Job description

Job Description Overview Working across the globe, V2X builds smart solutions designed to integrate physical and digital infrastructure from base to battlefield. We bring 120 years of successful mission support to improve security, streamline logistics, and enhance readiness. Aligned around a shared purpose, our $3.9B company and 16,000 people work alongside our clients, here and abroad, to tackle their most complex challenges with integrity, respect, responsibility, and professionalism. The Senior Interconnect Engineer is responsible for the design, validation, and sustainment of electrical interconnection systems that meet the stringent requirements of military and civil platforms. This role integrates multidisciplinary technical expertise with compliance‑driven execution to ensure that wire harnesses, connectors, and interface architectures conform to mission‑critical standards such as AS50881 (wiring aerospace vehicles) and IPC/WHMA‑A‑620 (acceptability of cable and wire harness assemblies). The Senior Interconnect Engineer independently develops and releases complete interconnect Technical Data Packages (TDPs) using PTC CREO Schematics and PTC CREO Parametric tools that conform to ASME Y14‑series drafting standards. Senior Interconnect Engineers serve as the bridge between electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, systems engineering (integration), and manufacturing-translating interface requirements into robust, traceable, and certifiable interconnect solutions. Senior Interconnect Engineers are engaged throughout the full Product Lifecycle Management process. They advise on interface strategy during early design phases, support BOM development for interconnect components, enable integration during system build, and provide sustainment support for depot‑level maintenance and upgrades. They work with minimal supervision, provide Interconnect technical leadership on projects, and review the work of junior interconnect engineers. At V2X Indianapolis, Senior Interconnect Engineers support platforms ranging from ground systems to FAA and DoD aircraft, requiring expertise in Aerospace, Electrical, RF, Mechanical Packaging, and Systems Integration. Their work ensures that every signal and power path is engineered for reliability, maintainability, and compliance-ready for deployment in the most demanding operational environments. Travel: Limited, in support of program objectives. Responsibilities Key Responsibilities: * Execute cable and wire harness design tasks with minimal supervision for aviation-focused military applications. * Apply AS50881 and IPC/WHMA-A-620 workmanship and routing standards to cable/harness designs. * Interpret and translate Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and system requirements into interconnect architecture, pin mapping, and routing strategies. * Incorporate electrical design considerations into wiring systems, including voltage drop, AWG selection, breaker sizing, RF line loss, relay usage, and grounding/shielding practices. * Independently create and maintain Technical Data Packages (TDPs), ensuring configuration control and revision traceability. * Use PTC CREO Schematics and PTC CREO Parametric to generate: * Wiring diagrams and interconnect schematics * Harness drawings and wire tables * Detail and assembly models * Installation drawings and related documentation * Develop interconnect documentation sets formatted to ASME Y14.100, Y14.24, and Y14.5 standards, consistent with MIL-STD-31000. * Use PTC Windchill for document release, BOM integration, and change management. * Participate in technical project execution activities, trade studies, and engineering analyses related to interconnect design. * Coordinate with systems, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and program teams to ensure interconnect solutions meet fit, function, and performance requirements. * Support fit checks, routing validation, and integration activities during system build and test as needed. * Contribute to preparation for internal and external technical meetings; provide clear, technical communication of design status, risks, and issues. * Manage multiple design tasks concurrently in an organized manner, maintaining attention to detail and thoroughness. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Education: * Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM field, or 8+ years of equivalent experience in cable/harness design. * Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD secret clearance. Experience: * 5+ years of professional engineering experience with a strong technical background, preferably in interconnect or wiring design. Skills and Technology Used: * Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, PowerPoint). * CAD tool knowledge with proficiency in 3D and schematic environments. * Moderate to strong ability to read and develop schematics, mechanical drawings, and harness documentation. * Ability to work in a process-oriented organization and follow configuration management procedures. * Effective oral and written communication skills. * Organized, self-starting, capable of multi-tasking, and able to work both independently and in a team environment. * Ability to interface with personnel of multiple disciplines and job functions (systems, software, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, program management, vendors.
