Job description

Be Part of an Amazing Story.

Macy’s is more than just a store. We’re a story. One that’s captured the hearts and minds of America for more than 160 years. A story about innovations and traditions…about inspiring stores and irresistible products…about the excitement of the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, and the wonder of the Thanksgiving Day Parade. We’ve been part of memorable moments and milestones for countless customers and colleagues. Those stories are part of what makes this such a special place to work.

Job Overview

The Asset Protection Captain leads the store’s Asset Protection efforts by training, coaching, and supervising Asset Protection colleagues in detecting, preventing, and responding to theft, fraud, and safety-related incidents. This role supports a safe, secure, and customer-focused store environment while helping protect company assets, reduce risk, and support store profitability.

Why This Role Matters

Asset Protection Captains play a critical role in protecting our customers, colleagues, and company assets. Through strong leadership, training, investigations, and partnership with store teams and local law enforcement, this role helps create a controlled environment where customers can shop with confidence and colleagues can deliver service safely and effectively.

How Our Asset Protection Colleagues Spend Their Day…

  • Our colleagues begin each day energized and ready to make an impact. They greet teammates with a warm hello. Before they get started, they review updates and department information so they're fully informed and ready to engage with confidence.
  • We believe service starts with each other - supporting one another with honesty, care, and collaboration so we can better serve our customers and communities.
  • And we know that excellence is a journey - we strive to improve every day, take pride in our work, achieve sales goals and learn from each other to deliver individual and store results.

What To Expect

  • Lead, coach, and support Asset Protection colleagues in theft prevention, investigations, apprehension procedures, and company standards.
  • Partner with store leadership to support a safe, secure, and customer-focused environment.
  • Use surveillance, alarm, reporting, and computer systems to monitor activity, document incidents, and support investigations.
  • Respond to customer and colleague incidents, including first aid situations, safety concerns, and potential liability matters.
  • Support store and company policies related to apprehensions, searches, seizures, evidence preservation, and legal compliance.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Lead and develop Asset Protection colleagues by training, coaching, and reinforcing best practices for theft prevention, investigations, and apprehensions.
  • Help reduce loss by supporting programs and routines that prevent theft, fraud, and policy violations involving customers or colleagues.
  • Protect company assets by recovering merchandise, responding to incidents, and apprehending shoplifters or individuals involved in criminal activity.
  • Investigate incidents involving customers, colleagues, or company property, while following company policies and legal requirements.
  • Create clear, timely, and accurate reports for theft incidents, merchandise recoveries, accident investigations, audits, and other assigned activities.
  • Support store compliance by conducting and overseeing audits, identifying gaps, and helping ensure standards are consistently maintained.
  • Build strong partnerships with store leadership and local law enforcement to support investigations and potential criminal cases.
  • Represent the company professionally in court, when needed, for criminal or civil cases involving company interests.
  • Support special assignments, investigations, surveillance, and alarm response as directed by the Store Asset Protection Manager.
  • Create a respectful and inclusive environment that strengthens trust with colleagues, customers, and the communities we serve.

Skills That Matter

Must Have

  • Experience training, coaching, or supervising others in a retail, security, asset protection, or related environment.
  • Ability to identify, investigate, and respond to theft, fraud, safety, and policy-related incidents.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn company policies and legal requirements related to apprehensions, searches, seizures, and evidence preservation.
  • Ability to complete required security training and maintain certifications required by law.
  • Ability to apprehend shoplifters and respond appropriately to incidents in a retail environment.
  • Maintain regular, dependable attendance and punctuality, and perform other duties as needed.
  • For jobs in New York, a current New York State Security Guard License is required.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with surveillance, alarm, reporting, or case management systems.
  • Experience partnering with local law enforcement or supporting criminal investigations.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing clear, complete, and timely incident reports.

Responsibilities include the ability to access and review written and electronic information, and to move within the work environment and interact with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing/walking around store or department.
  • May occasionally involve reaching above eye level, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
