Senior Analog Layout Engineer information

What are some common challenges senior analog layout engineers face when collaborating with circuit designers, and how can they be addressed?

Senior Analog Layout Engineers often encounter challenges such as translating complex circuit schematics into efficient physical layouts while meeting stringent performance requirements. Miscommunications or differing priorities between layout engineers and circuit designers can lead to design iterations or delays. To address these challenges, it’s important to establish clear communication channels, participate in regular design reviews, and use collaborative tools for feedback and issue tracking. Being proactive in discussing layout constraints and providing early feedback can help ensure that both layout and performance goals are achieved efficiently.

What is a senior analog layout engineer?

Senior Analog Layout Engineers are experienced professionals who design and implement the physical layout of analog integrated circuits (ICs) such as amplifiers, data converters, and power management chips. They translate circuit schematics into detailed layouts that ensure optimal electrical performance, reliability, and manufacturability. Their responsibilities include working closely with circuit designers, performing layout-versus-schematic (LVS) checks, and using specialized Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. Senior engineers often mentor junior staff and help resolve complex layout challenges. Their expertise is critical in ensuring the final chip meets specifications and industry standards.

What is the difference between Senior Analog Layout Engineer vs Analog IC Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Analog Layout EngineerAnalog IC Design Engineer
Primary FocusPhysical layout and implementation of analog circuitsDesign and simulation of analog circuits
Skills RequiredLayout tools, fabrication process knowledge, circuit understandingCircuit theory, schematic design, simulation skills
Work EnvironmentFoundries, semiconductor companies, R&D labsDesign teams, R&D departments, EDA tool usage
Common UsageInvolved in physical design phaseInvolved in circuit conceptualization and schematic design

While both roles require a strong understanding of analog circuits, the Senior Analog Layout Engineer focuses on translating circuit schematics into physical layouts, ensuring manufacturability and performance. In contrast, the Analog IC Design Engineer primarily designs and simulates the circuits themselves. Both roles often collaborate but differ in their core responsibilities and skill sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior analog layout engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Analog Layout Engineer, you need deep knowledge of analog/mixed-signal IC layout, semiconductor device physics, and experience with advanced CMOS processes, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Mentor Graphics, and DRC/LVS verification systems is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong collaboration skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These abilities ensure high-performance, reliable chip designs that meet stringent industry standards and project timelines.

Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Tactical Recon & Strike team at Anduril develops aerial small drones (Group 1-3) and all equipment to test, deploy and operate. The team is responsible for taking products like Ghost, Anvil, Bolt and Altius from concepts to operational systems. We work in close coordination with specialist teams to solve some of the hardest problems facing our customers. We are looking for software engineers, hardware engineers, roboticists, and front-end mobile developers who are excited about creating a powerful robotics platform that can be tasked and viewed in real-time through a variety of interfaces.

ABOUT THE JOB

We are looking for a Senior Firmware Engineer to join our rapidly growing team in Atlanta, GA. In this role, you will be responsible for developing low-level software/firmware for embedded systems products. You will develop and deliver features to the firmware layer which underpins the operations of all Tactical Recon & Strike products. This will require outstanding C coding ability and deep familiarity with the language standard, practical experience with common IC bus protocols and extensive experience integrating microcontrollers with analog and digital sensors, as well as developing firmware application logic in bare-metal or RTOS environments. If you are someone who has a demonstrated track record of technical leadership and product ownership this role is for you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Develop robust, high-confidence software/firmware for microcontrollers, create reusable device drivers, and architect system-level features to support desired product functionality.
  • Exercise deep product ownership, driving program-level efforts to maximize customer impact.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers and level-up the overall capability of the TRS Firmware team.
  • Work cross-functionally with Electrical, Software, and Product Design teams to ensure program success, from prototype design through to customer deployment.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvement at both the team and program level, and deliver solutions to realize those improvements.
  • Enable rapid development iteration by coordinating new-hardware bringup and quickly troubleshooting hardware issues that span the electrical, firmware, and software boundaries.
  • Coordinate firmware support for Test Engineering to ensure the high-yield production and manufacture of hardware products.
  • Support product field testing to quantify customer value and identify firmware feature opportunities with high program impact.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 8+ years of experience developing software/firmware for embedded systems.
  • MS in CS/CE/EE or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated track record of technical leadership and product ownership.
  • Extensive experience integrating microcontrollers with analog and digital sensors and developing firmware application logic in bare-metal or RTOS environments.
  • Outstanding C coding ability and deep familiarity with the language standard.
  • Solid understanding and application of software development best practices, software/hardware debugging approaches, and board bringup methodology.
  • Practical experience with common IC bus protocols such as I2C, SPI, USB, CAN, RS232, RS485, Ethernet, etc.
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with the implementation details of one or more microcontroller cores (ARM, AVR, MSP430, PIC, etc.)
  • Direct experience implementing firmware applications interfacing with CAN peripherals.
  • Firmware/hardware debugging skills with JTAG, SWD, Oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Experience with test-driven development for embedded systems, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and devops for firmware applications.
