What is a senior AI agent developer?

A Senior AI Agent Developer is an experienced software engineer who specializes in designing, building, and deploying intelligent agents using artificial intelligence techniques. These professionals work with advanced technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning to create agents that can autonomously perform complex tasks. They often lead teams, architect solutions, and ensure that AI systems meet performance, reliability, and ethical standards. Their expertise is crucial for developing applications in areas like virtual assistants, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and enterprise automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior AI agent developer?

To thrive as a Senior AI Agent Developer, you need advanced programming skills (especially in Python), deep knowledge of machine learning and reinforcement learning algorithms, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with AI frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and tools for deploying and monitoring agents is typical, along with experience using cloud platforms like AWS or Azure. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this role. Job description

We are looking for a Senior AI Agent Specialist for a 12-month contract position, with possible extensions in Calgary, Alberta. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Position is available as on-site location. 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week.

Role Description

We are seeking a Senior AI Agent Specialist to define how our client's organization develops, evaluates, governs, and supports AI agents, including establishing standards, approved platforms, and criteria for moving citizen-built solutions into enterprise use. This is a hands-on strategy and advisory role requiring practical experience with AI technologies. The role offers an opportunity to shape the organization’s approach to AI agents in an emerging and rapidly evolving field.

Responsibilities

  • Own the enterprise AI agent strategy, including approved platforms, design and development standards, governance, evaluation, and promotion criteria.
  • Establish the citizen-development model, maker community, training, and adoption approach, while evaluating key AI platforms and ensuring standards are practical and aligned with the evolving technology landscape.
  • Define AI agent inventory and guardrails, support delivery teams, and report on the organization’s AI agent strategy and maturity to leadership.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience developing strategies, frameworks, and standards in emerging areas where established industry practices are still evolving, including approaches to AI agent evaluation, oversight, and human-in-the-loop controls.
  • Working knowledge of AI agent development tools beyond the Microsoft ecosystem, including OpenAI Codex and Anthropic Claude Code, with the ability to assess technologies and recommend the most appropriate platform for a given use case.
  • Demonstrated success in creating and enabling citizen development programs that deliver practical outcomes, supported by strong communication, change management, and stakeholder engagement skills, and a hands-on, business-oriented approach.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a related field is required. Post-graduate education in AI, data management, or digital transformation is considered highly desirable.
  • 8+ years of experience in software development and technology strategy, with a track record of establishing technical standards and strong hands-on expertise across Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, and the Power Platform.

Please note that while all applications are appreciated, only candidates selected for interview will be contacted.
