Job description

Senior Accounting Consultant – Nonprofit Organization

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accounting Consultant to support the financial operations of a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This individual will be responsible for general ledger accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, grant accounting, and month-end close activities. The ideal candidate has strong nonprofit accounting experience and a thorough understanding of GAAP and fund accounting.

Responsibilities

  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements
  • Maintain accurate general ledger and fund accounting records
  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Support grant accounting, including expense tracking and grant reporting
  • Prepare budget-to-actual and variance analyses
  • Assist with annual budgeting and forecasting
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting requirements
  • Support annual audits and prepare requested schedules and documentation
  • Assist with Form 990 preparation and other regulatory reporting
  • Review accounting processes and recommend improvements
  • Partner with leadership and program teams to provide financial guidance
  • Provide additional accounting support and special-project assistance as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • At least five years of accounting experience
  • Previous nonprofit accounting experience required
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and restricted funding
  • Experience with grants, audits, and nonprofit financial reporting
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables and lookup functions
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • CPA or public accounting experience is a plus
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting systems such as Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Blackbaud Financial Edge, or QuickBooks is preferred
