Senior Accountant information

What is a senior accountant?

A senior accountant oversees the accounting department for a company or organization. As a senior accountant, your responsibilities and duties include managing all incoming and outgoing payments and ensuring all ledgers are kept accurate and updated. You also conduct regular audits and supervise the other accountants, bookkeepers, and clerks in your department. To ensure the department runs smoothly, you train your staff thoroughly and monitor all transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Accountant, you need strong analytical abilities, advanced knowledge of accounting principles, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or finance, often accompanied by a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP software like SAP or Oracle, as well as advanced Excel skills, is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and supporting strategic business decisions.

What are some common challenges senior accountants face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Senior Accountants often oversee several projects or accounts at once, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Balancing deadlines for financial reporting, audits, and compliance tasks requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities. Effective communication with cross-functional teams and proactive planning are essential to ensure accuracy and timeliness, especially during peak periods like month-end or year-end close.

What is the difference between Senior Accountant vs Staff Accountant?

AspectSenior AccountantStaff Accountant

Work EnvironmentMore complex accounting tasks, supervision of staff, reportingData entry, reconciliations, assisting senior staff
Employer & Industry UsageCorporate finance, public accounting, large organizationsPublic accounting firms, corporate accounting departments

The main difference between a Senior Accountant and a Staff Accountant lies in experience, responsibilities, and complexity of tasks. Senior Accountants handle more advanced accounting functions, supervise staff, and often have CPA credentials, while Staff Accountants focus on foundational accounting tasks and support senior staff. Both roles are essential in accounting teams, but Senior Accountants typically have more experience and a broader scope of responsibilities.

How much does a senior accountant get paid?

The average salary for a senior accountant typically ranges from $65,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior accountants with certifications like CPA and proficiency in accounting software may earn higher salaries.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, accruals, and journal entries

  • Manage manufacturing and cost accounting across inventory, raw materials, labour, overhead, and product costs

  • Partner closely with Operations, Supply Chain, and other non-finance stakeholders

Job description

ABOUT US

At STRIVE Recruitment, we are a leading recruitment firm specialising in Accounting & Finance, Corporate Administration, Operations, and Technology. We connect exceptional talent with outstanding employers across Canada while delivering a consultative and professional recruitment experience.

THE CLIENT

STRIVE Recruitment is partnered with a well-established global manufacturing organisation based in the Lower Mainland.

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to take financial ownership of multiple growing manufacturing business units. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to move beyond a traditional month-end-focused role and gain greater exposure to Operations, process improvement, and business transformation.

The organisation is currently experiencing significant change and growth, creating an opportunity for the successful candidate to help build and improve processes while partnering closely with manufacturing and operational teams.

THE ROLE

The Senior Accountant will combine full-cycle accounting and financial reporting with cost accounting, operational business partnering, and process improvement.

Acting as the financial steward for assigned business units, you will lead month-end activities, analyse manufacturing costs and variances, maintain strong financial controls, and work directly with Operations and Supply Chain to identify and resolve financial and operational issues.

This role requires someone who is hands-on, proactive, and comfortable challenging existing processes rather than simply reporting the numbers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, accruals, and journal entries
  • Manage manufacturing and cost accounting across inventory, raw materials, labour, overhead, and product costs
  • Analyse material, purchase price, labour, inventory, margin, and manufacturing variances
  • Investigate the underlying causes of variances and partner with Operations to resolve issues
  • Review product costing, Bills of Materials (BOMs), inventory valuation, and manufacturing cost flows
  • Partner closely with Operations, Supply Chain, and other non-finance stakeholders
  • Identify financial and operational risks and recommend practical solutions
  • Establish and improve accounting processes, controls, and workflows
  • Support internal and external audits and ensure compliance with IFRS/GAAP
  • Support business transformation and process improvement initiatives across multiple locations
  • Provide accounting guidance and financial insight to support operational decision-making

REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience
  • Previous accounting experience within a manufacturing environment is required
  • Strong cost accounting knowledge, including inventory, BOMs, raw materials, labour, overhead, and product costing
  • Hands-on experience investigating material/purchase price and labour variances
  • Canadian CPA designation preferred; candidates actively pursuing their CPA may be considered
  • Strong understanding of IFRS/GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Experience partnering directly with Operations, Supply Chain, or Production teams
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Proactive and independent approach with confidence challenging existing processes and influencing stakeholders
  • Strong Excel and ERP experience
  • Multi-site manufacturing and process improvement experience considered an asset
  • Ability to travel periodically within North America
  • Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency required due to regulatory requirements associated with the position

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Base salary: $95,000–$115,000
  • Performance-based bonus
  • 3 weeks vacation
  • Extended health and dental benefits
  • 2% RSP matching
  • Hybrid working environment
  • Strong career progression potential
  • Exposure to business transformation and multi-site manufacturing operations
  • Permanent, full-time opportunity

APPLY NOW

If you have strong manufacturing and cost accounting experience and are looking for a Senior Accountant opportunity with greater ownership, operational exposure, and long-term growth potential, please apply directly or reach out to STRIVE Recruitment for a confidential discussion.
