Semiconductor Validation information

What is the difference between Semiconductor Validation vs Semiconductor Test Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor ValidationSemiconductor Test Engineer
Primary FocusVerifying chip functionality and performance through comprehensive testing and validation processesDesigning and executing tests to ensure semiconductor devices meet specifications during production
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, R&D centers, and validation labsManufacturing facilities and test floors
Required SkillsHardware/software testing, scripting, debugging, knowledge of chip architectureTest equipment operation, automation, data analysis, troubleshooting
Industry UsageUsed in R&D and product development phasesPrimarily in manufacturing and quality assurance

Semiconductor Validation and Semiconductor Test Engineer roles overlap in testing skills and industry environment but differ in focus. Validation emphasizes verifying chip functionality during development, while Test Engineering concentrates on production testing to ensure quality. Both roles are essential in the semiconductor industry, often working closely to bring reliable products to market.

Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer
Location: Sterling, VA 23220
About Accelevation
We build what the future runs on. Accelevation designs, manufactures, and installs the physical infrastructure that powers today's most advanced technologies. We've grown over 440% in the last 18 months because we take ownership, solve hard problems, and build with purpose. Join us to build the future.
Your Impact
As a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you will own the electrical design of high-current solid-state switching platforms that power mission-critical environments. Your work will directly influence the reliability, protection strategy, and performance of systems where failure is not an option. You will lead detailed schematic design for SCR/thyristor-based switching architectures, shaping protection strategies, fault response behavior, and thermal performance at the system level. This role blends deep technical expertise with cross-functional leadership, partnering with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and compliance teams to bring robust, UL-certified power platforms to market.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Contributing to system-level architecture and electrical subsystem definition for high-current solid-state switching equipment
  • Owning detailed power and control schematic design for SCR/thyristor-based switching platforms
  • Designing and optimizing critical circuits including:
  • Isolated gate drive and firing circuits
  • Snubber networks and dv/dt protection
  • di/dt limiting strategies
  • Fault commutation and semiconductor protection mechanisms
  • Performing thermal analysis and Safe Operating Area (SOA) evaluations for high-power semiconductor modules
  • Conducting short-circuit, overload, fault current, and protection coordination studies
  • Reviewing PCB layouts for high-current routing, creepage/clearance compliance, isolation integrity, and EMC performance
  • Supporting high-current validation and lab testing activities (up to 1600A)
  • Participating in cross-functional design reviews and providing technical guidance to firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing teams
  • Supporting compliance-driven development and UL certification efforts for low-voltage power electronics products

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's preferred)
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in industrial power electronics design
  • Proven experience designing schematics for high-current systems
  • Deep expertise in SCR/thyristor-based solid-state switching systems
  • Experience developing industrial power electronics equipment such as inverters, converters, or static switching systems
  • Familiarity with UL requirements and NEC guidelines for low-voltage power equipment
  • Proficiency with schematic design tools such as Altium Designer or OrCAD
  • Experience reviewing PCB layouts in high-power applications
  • Working knowledge of EMC/EMI mitigation techniques in power electronics

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting products through UL certification or compliance testing
  • Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or LTspice
  • Background in redundant or high-reliability power architectures
  • Experience with FPGA/DSP-based control platforms for power switching applications

Core Competencies
  • Safety: Proactively fosters a culture of safety in high-power development and testing environments
  • Inclusion: Appreciates and respects individuals from diverse backgrounds, identities, and values
  • Speed: Operates with urgency in mission-critical product development timelines
  • Innovation: Continuously improves system robustness, protection strategies, and design efficiency
  • Judgment: Exercises strong technical decision-making in high-risk, high-current design scenarios
  • Accountability: Owns design integrity, validation outcomes, and product reliability

Benefits
  • Competitive salary and performance bonus
  • Paid time off
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Collaborative, high-performance workplace
