What is a semiconductor startup?

A Semiconductor Startup job involves working in a new or early-stage company focused on semiconductor technology, such as chip design, fabrication, or advanced materials. Employees often wear multiple hats, contributing to areas like research, development, manufacturing, and business strategy. These roles require strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and adaptability to a fast-paced, high-risk environment. Working in a semiconductor startup provides opportunities for innovation and rapid career growth but may come with uncertainties typical of startups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a semiconductor startup, and why are they important?

To thrive in a semiconductor startup, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, semiconductor physics, and experience with chip design and fabrication processes. Familiarity with EDA tools (like Cadence, Synopsys), cleanroom procedures, and industry standards is typically required, along with any relevant certifications. Agile problem-solving, resilience, and collaborative communication are valuable soft skills in this dynamic environment. These qualities are critical for navigating rapid technical iteration, scaling innovation, and achieving business milestones in a highly competitive industry.

What are typical challenges faced when working at a semiconductor startup, and how can I best prepare for them?

At a semiconductor startup, you may encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, rapidly evolving technical requirements, and limited resources compared to larger companies. Team members often wear multiple hats, requiring flexibility and a willingness to learn new skills quickly. To thrive, it's helpful to stay adaptable, prioritize clear communication with your team, and embrace a proactive approach to solving problems. This fast-paced, innovative atmosphere can accelerate your professional growth and provide deep exposure to all stages of semiconductor product development.

Job description

Job Summary:
Bolt Graphics is a semiconductor startup based in Sunnyvale, CA building the fastest and most efficient graphics processors. As the Principal Master Data Architect & PLM Owner, you will design the foundational blueprints for how data is structured and synchronized across the digital ecosystem while leading the integration and implementation of an enterprise cloud PLM system.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Design and enforce Bolt Graphicsโ€™ Enterprise Item Master, including part-numbering strategies (smart or sequential), component categorization frameworks, custom attributes, and lifecycle state definitions.
โ€ข Architect the data mapping, pipelines, and API integrations between engineering CAD/EDA environments, the PLM system, and downstream ERP/MES platforms to ensure a single source of truth
โ€ข Establish data-quality automation rules and validation scripts to proactively catch duplicate components, formatting errors, or incomplete metadata before data hits production.
โ€ข Act as the ultimate authority on data governance, leading the Data Governance Council to align cross-functional stakeholders on data standards and impact analysis.
โ€ข Lead the cross-functional evaluation, selection, and deployment roadmap of our enterprise PLM platform (e.g., Arena, Agile).
โ€ข Own the Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL) strategy to migrate legacy data, disparate engineering spreadsheets, and silicon/hardware designs into the centralized PLM repository
โ€ข Architect and manage robust Engineering Change Order (ECO), Manufacturing Change Order (MCO), and deviance workflows, optimizing for both engineering velocity and operational rigor.
โ€ข Establish secure, automated data-sharing protocols to syndicate approved vendor lists (AVL), manufacturer part numbers (MPNs), and release packages down to external foundries, ODMs, and EMS partners.
โ€ข Conduct routine integrity audits on the Bill of Materials (BOM) data stack to ensure strict compliance, traceability, and readiness for high-volume manufacturing.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 7โ€“10+ years of experience in Master Data Management (MDM), Configuration Management, or Product Data Architecture within a complex hardware development environment
โ€ข Proven track record of leading at least one full-lifecycle, ground-up implementation or major migration of an enterprise PLM platform
โ€ข Direct experience mapping schemas and scoping APIs for PLM-to-ERP integrations
โ€ข Strong proficiency in data analysis and validation techniques
โ€ข Experience writing SQL queries, utilizing advanced Excel, or leveraging Python/data visualization tools (Tableau/PowerBI) to audit and report on data health metrics
โ€ข Deep understanding of how hardware engineering data is generated, specifically managing EDA data (Cadence, Altium, Synopsys) and mechanical CAD databases (SolidWorks, Creo)
โ€ข BS/BA in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, Operations, or a related technical discipline
Preferred:
โ€ข Silicon, HPC, ASIC, or Server architecture highly preferred
โ€ข Arena or Oracle Agile preferred
โ€ข Experience with middleware/iPaaS tools (Celigo, Workato, MuleSoft) is a major plus
โ€ข Master's degree or relevant data governance certifications preferred
