Semiconductor Startup information

What is a semiconductor startup?

A Semiconductor Startup job involves working in a new or early-stage company focused on semiconductor technology, such as chip design, fabrication, or advanced materials. Employees often wear multiple hats, contributing to areas like research, development, manufacturing, and business strategy. These roles require strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and adaptability to a fast-paced, high-risk environment. Working in a semiconductor startup provides opportunities for innovation and rapid career growth but may come with uncertainties typical of startups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a semiconductor startup, and why are they important?

To thrive in a semiconductor startup, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, semiconductor physics, and experience with chip design and fabrication processes. Familiarity with EDA tools (like Cadence, Synopsys), cleanroom procedures, and industry standards is typically required, along with any relevant certifications. Agile problem-solving, resilience, and collaborative communication are valuable soft skills in this dynamic environment. These qualities are critical for navigating rapid technical iteration, scaling innovation, and achieving business milestones in a highly competitive industry.

What are typical challenges faced when working at a semiconductor startup, and how can I best prepare for them?

At a semiconductor startup, you may encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, rapidly evolving technical requirements, and limited resources compared to larger companies. Team members often wear multiple hats, requiring flexibility and a willingness to learn new skills quickly. To thrive, it's helpful to stay adaptable, prioritize clear communication with your team, and embrace a proactive approach to solving problems. This fast-paced, innovative atmosphere can accelerate your professional growth and provide deep exposure to all stages of semiconductor product development.

About the Opportunity

We are conducting a confidential search on behalf of a pioneering AI semiconductor company redefining how intelligence is deployed at the edge. The company has developed a breakthrough processing architecture enabling ultra-efficient, real-time intelligence across devices operating outside traditional cloud environments -- addressing critical industry challenges in power consumption, latency, privacy, security, and scalability.

The organization is entering a significant growth phase as customer adoption accelerates across global markets.

The Role

The VP of Engineering will lead global engineering, product development, software, silicon architecture, and technology commercialization. Reporting to the CEO and serving on the executive leadership team, this executive will transform innovative technology into scalable commercial products while driving organizational growth and customer success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and execute the technology and product roadmap in partnership with Product and R&D
  • Lead global engineering organizations spanning silicon design, chip architecture, software, AI/ML, systems, and product engineering
  • Drive next-generation products from concept through commercialization
  • Partner with strategic customers and ecosystem partners to accelerate adoption
  • Establish scalable development processes, quality systems, and organizational structures
  • Build and mentor high-performing technical leadership teams
  • Collaborate with executive leadership and the Board on strategic initiatives
Required Qualifications
  • 20+ years of technology leadership with a track record of delivering commercially successful SoC products
  • Proven success leading engineering and product development organizations
  • Experience bringing complex hardware/software platforms to market
  • Strong background in semiconductor technologies, AI acceleration, embedded computing, or advanced system architectures
  • Demonstrated ability to scale organizations during rapid growth
  • Experience managing geographically distributed engineering teams
Preferred Experience

AI/ML, edge computing, semiconductor IP licensing and manufacturing, embedded systems, hardware/software co-design, AI infrastructure, advanced computing architectures

Why This Opportunity
