Semiconductor Quality Engineer information

What are some common challenges semiconductor quality engineers face in ensuring product reliability?

Semiconductor Quality Engineers often encounter challenges related to rapidly evolving manufacturing processes, stringent industry standards, and the need to detect minute defects that can impact chip performance. They must work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, process, and production engineers, to implement robust quality controls and root cause analyses. Staying updated on new technologies and maintaining clear communication are essential for managing quality issues efficiently and ensuring that products meet both customer and regulatory expectations.

What does a semiconductor quality engineer do?

A Semiconductor Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that semiconductor products meet established quality standards and specifications. They develop and implement quality control processes, perform failure analysis, and collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to resolve quality issues. Their work includes analyzing data, conducting audits, and driving continuous improvement in production processes to minimize defects and ensure product reliability. Ultimately, they play a crucial role in guaranteeing that semiconductor devices are safe and perform as intended for end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a semiconductor quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Quality Engineer, you need expertise in quality assurance, semiconductor manufacturing processes, and statistical analysis, usually supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Statistical Process Control (SPC), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and quality management systems like ISO 9001 is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are essential to ensure product reliability, maintain industry standards, and drive continuous improvement in semiconductor manufacturing.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Quality Engineer vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor Quality EngineerSemiconductor Process Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring product quality, defect prevention, and compliance with standardsDesigning, developing, and optimizing manufacturing processes
Skills & CertificationsQuality management, testing, inspection, certifications (e.g., ISO)Process engineering, manufacturing techniques, statistical analysis
Work EnvironmentQuality labs, manufacturing floors, supplier auditsCleanrooms, fabrication facilities, process development labs
Industry UsageUsed across semiconductor manufacturing companies focusing on product qualityUsed in process development and manufacturing optimization

The Semiconductor Quality Engineer primarily focuses on maintaining and improving product quality, ensuring standards are met, and preventing defects. In contrast, the Semiconductor Process Engineer concentrates on developing and refining manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency and yield. Both roles are essential in semiconductor manufacturing but serve different aspects of the production cycle.

Heraeus Electro-Nite (HEN) provides solutions for the molten metal industry. We lead the market with our innovations since the 1950s. As a global company with 25 locations and approximately 4,000 employees worldwide, we are committed to the sustainable growth of our teams and sites.
Heraeus Electro-Nite, headquartered in Houthalen (Belgium), is part of the Heraeus Group. The Technology Group delivers world-class quality in the areas of Precious Metals, Healthcare, Semiconductor & Electronics and Industrials. As one of the top 10 family-owned companies in Germany, Heraeus employs around 15,100 employees in 40 countries.
Summary:
Incumbent will lead quality excellence across platinum laboratory operations and thermal processing systems that are core to our business. The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring the quality, capability, and continuous improvement of precious metals laboratory and furnace room operations within a manufacturing environment. This role serves as the quality authority for precious metal analytical testing, thermal processing, and material accountability while driving digitalization initiatives, data integrity, and process modernization. The Quality Engineer partners cross-functionally to improve process robustness, reduce variability, enhance traceability, and support operational excellence through data-enabled decision making.
Your role and responsibilities:
  • As Quality Engineer, you'll support platinum laboratory operations and furnace-room thermal processing. In this role, you'll strengthen process capability, material traceability, and analytical excellence for high-value precious-metal operations, and ensure compliance with standards and customer requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain process controls, inspection strategies, and acceptance criteria for melting, heat treatment, alloying, and precious-metal recovery operations.
  • Apply SPC and capability analysis to monitor trends, assess stability, and drive improvements.
  • Lead PFMEA, Control Plans, and quality risk assessments to ensure sustained mitigation.
  • Provide analytical oversight for platinum lab operations, including method development, validation, and measurement-uncertainty evaluation.
  • Partner with Engineering to qualify, validate, and optimize furnace processes; lead investigations into furnace excursions or metallurgical anomalies.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and data-driven methodologies to reduce variation, scrap, and precious-metal losses.
  • Lead or support CAPA activities, root-cause investigations, and audit readiness efforts for lab and furnace operations.

What is require for this role:
  • Associate degree (minimum) in a relevant technical field.
  • Quality Engineering experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Prior laboratory or laboratory-operations experience (highly desired).
  • Working knowledge of SPC, CAPA, PFMEA, Control Plans, and root-cause analysis.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
  • Proficiency with Lean and Six Sigma practices.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to influence cross-functional teams.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer credential (preferred).
