What is a semiconductor process integration engineer?

A Semiconductor Process Integration Engineer is responsible for developing and optimizing semiconductor fabrication processes by integrating various process modules, such as lithography, etching, deposition, and CMP. They work closely with design, process, and equipment engineers to ensure device performance, yield, and manufacturability. Their role involves data analysis, troubleshooting process issues, and continuous improvement of semiconductor manufacturing. Additionally, they help with technology transfers and scaling processes for high-volume production.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a semiconductor process integration engineer?

As a Semiconductor Process Integration Engineer, your daily tasks usually involve coordinating with process and device engineers, analyzing production data, and troubleshooting yield or performance issues in semiconductor manufacturing. You may develop and optimize process flows, work on root cause analyses for defects, and implement new technologies to improve device performance. Routine meetings with cross-functional teams—such as design, process engineering, and quality assurance—are common, and your role often includes documenting experimental results and preparing technical presentations. This hands-on, dynamic work environment fosters both technical growth and opportunities to contribute directly to product quality and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a semiconductor process integration engineer?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Process Integration Engineer, you need a solid understanding of semiconductor device physics, fabrication processes, and materials science, often requiring at least a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Proficiency with semiconductor process simulation tools (such as TCAD), data analysis software, and familiarity with cleanroom protocols is essential. Effective communication, problem-solving, and strong project management skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for optimizing process flows, troubleshooting production issues, and fostering successful collaboration in a multidisciplinary manufacturing environment.

Job description

Senior BEOL Process Integration Engineer | Semiconductor

Location: Chandler, AZ
Compensation: $140,000 - $180,000 annually, depending on experience
Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire
Industry: Semiconductor Manufacturing

Senior BEOL Process Integration Engineer

PPG Staffing is recruiting a highly experienced Senior BEOL Process Integration Engineer for a growing semiconductor technology manufacturer in Chandler, Arizona.

This is a high-impact engineering opportunity for an experienced semiconductor professional with deep Back End of Line, BEOL, process integration experience. The successful candidate will work closely with Fab Operations, Process Engineering, Yield Engineering, and external foundry partners to improve product yield, reliability, process capability, quality, and manufacturing performance.

This position requires previous hands-on experience working in a semiconductor BEOL process integration role. Candidates without semiconductor wafer fabrication and BEOL integration experience will not be a match for this particular opportunity.

Important: This role is based in Chandler, Arizona and requires travel and/or extended assignments at a foundry partner location in Oregon, particularly during the initial technology-transfer phase.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and manage BEOL process integration activities supporting advanced semiconductor products.
  • Drive improvements in product yield, process stability, capability, quality, reliability, cost, productivity, and safety.
  • Identify yield-limiting process weaknesses and develop permanent corrective solutions.
  • Work closely with Fab Process and Yield Engineering teams to troubleshoot complex manufacturing issues.
  • Evaluate the interaction of multiple semiconductor process modules across the complete BEOL process flow.
  • Support process development, qualification, optimization, and high-volume manufacturing.
  • Partner with external foundries on technology transfer, process matching, and manufacturing ramp activities.
  • Support the transfer of process technologies from development into high-volume manufacturing.
  • Analyze manufacturing and process data using statistical and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Utilize SPC, FDC, DOE, and JMP to evaluate process capability and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Work cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, operations, and external foundry teams.
  • Provide technical leadership and subject-matter expertise for semiconductor BEOL integration activities.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. degree or higher in Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of semiconductor BEOL process integration experience.
  • Previous professional experience specifically performing process integration within a semiconductor wafer fab environment.
  • Strong knowledge of semiconductor BEOL manufacturing and process flows.
  • Strong experience with multiple process modules, including:
    • Photolithography / Photo
    • Etch
    • Thin Films
    • CMP
  • Demonstrated experience working with Fab Process and Yield Engineering teams to identify and correct yield-limiting process issues.
  • Experience with semiconductor technology transfer and working with foundry partners.
  • Experience transferring processes or technologies from development/R&D into high-volume manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Statistical Process Control, SPC
    • Fault Detection and Classification, FDC
    • Design of Experiments, DOE
    • JMP or comparable statistical-analysis tools
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to lead technical initiatives and independently drive projects to completion.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and/or complete extended assignments at a foundry partner location in Oregon.

Ideal Background

We are particularly interested in engineers who have worked directly within a semiconductor wafer fabrication environment and have been responsible for integrating and optimizing multiple BEOL process modules rather than specializing exclusively in a single process area.

Experience involving yield enhancement, interconnect integration, process transfer, manufacturing ramp, foundry interfaces, Photo, Etch, Thin Films, CMP, SPC, DOE, or JMP is highly desirable.

Candidates coming from major semiconductor manufacturers, foundries, memory manufacturers, or advanced semiconductor technology organizations are encouraged to apply.

Compensation

$140,000 - $180,000 annually, depending on depth of semiconductor BEOL integration experience, technical background, education, and overall qualifications.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This position provides an opportunity to take technical ownership of critical semiconductor process integration activities while working directly with senior Fab leadership and external foundry partners.

The engineer selected for this position will have meaningful influence over yield, manufacturing performance, technology transfer, process capability, and the successful production of advanced semiconductor products.

Apply today for confidential consideration. Qualified candidates will be contacted directly by PPG Staffing.
