As of Aug 27, 2026, the average hourly pay for semiconductor physics in Texas is $18.69, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $11.63 and $23.75 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is semiconductor physics?

A Semiconductor Physics job involves studying and applying the physical principles governing semiconductor materials and devices. Professionals in this field work on developing and optimizing semiconductor components such as transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits used in electronics. They may conduct research, design experiments, and collaborate with engineers to improve semiconductor performance and fabrication processes. These roles are crucial in industries like consumer electronics, telecommunications, and computing, where semiconductors are the foundation of advanced technology.

What does someone working in semiconductor physics do?

Professionals in Semiconductor Physics often split their time between experimental lab work, data analysis, and collaborating with engineers and researchers on new device concepts or performance improvements. Daily tasks may include designing and conducting experiments, running simulations to model semiconductor behaviors, interpreting measurement results, and preparing technical reports or presentations. Many also participate in regular team meetings to discuss project updates, share findings, and solve technical challenges together. This role requires adaptability and close collaboration with fabrication engineers, material scientists, and other specialists to drive innovation in semiconductor technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in semiconductor physics?

To excel in Semiconductor Physics, a strong background in solid-state physics, materials science, and advanced mathematics is typically required, along with a relevant graduate degree. Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication tools, characterization equipment (such as electron microscopes), and simulation software like COMSOL or TCAD is also important. Critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this field. These competencies enable professionals to innovate in device development, troubleshoot complex issues, and contribute effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

How much does a semiconductor physicist make?

Semiconductor physicists typically earn a median salary ranging from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Advanced roles or those with specialized skills in nanotechnology or device modeling may offer higher compensation, especially in research and development environments.
