Semiconductor Applications Engineer information

What does a semiconductor applications engineer do?

A Semiconductor Applications Engineer works closely with customers and internal teams to help design, implement, and troubleshoot semiconductor products and solutions. They provide technical support, help optimize product performance, and ensure successful integration of semiconductor components into customer systems. Their role often involves a mix of hands-on engineering, customer interaction, and documentation, requiring both technical expertise and strong communication skills.

What are some common challenges semiconductor applications engineers face when supporting customers?

Semiconductor Applications Engineers often encounter the challenge of quickly understanding diverse customer requirements and troubleshooting complex technical issues across various applications. They must stay up-to-date with evolving semiconductor technologies and communicate effectively between engineering, sales, and customer teams. Balancing technical problem-solving with customer relationship management is key, and adapting solutions to fit each client's unique needs can be both demanding and rewarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a semiconductor applications engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Applications Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, semiconductor device physics, and circuit design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools (like SPICE), CAD software, and hands-on experience with lab equipment are commonly required, along with knowledge of industry standards. Strong problem-solving, communication, and customer-facing skills help you effectively address client needs and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for delivering technical solutions, supporting product integration, and ensuring customer satisfaction in a highly technical field.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Applications Engineer vs Semiconductor Design Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor Applications EngineerSemiconductor Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related; often certifications in industry toolsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering or related; strong background in circuit design
Work EnvironmentCustomer-facing, technical support, and product deploymentDesign labs, R&D, and development teams
Employer & Industry UsageSemiconductor companies, OEMs, and tech firmsSemiconductor manufacturers, chip design firms, and R&D centers

Semiconductor Applications Engineers focus on supporting customers, troubleshooting, and applying semiconductor products in real-world systems. In contrast, Semiconductor Design Engineers are involved in creating and developing new semiconductor devices and circuits. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in their primary functions and work environments.

Job description

Are you passionate about developing advanced hardware for next-generation wireless technologies? At Falcomm, we are transforming innovative semiconductor research into real-world solutions through high-performance, energy-efficient RF power amplifier technologies. Our mission is to enable faster, more efficient wireless communication systems by pushing the boundaries of RF design and integration.

Falcomm is seeking an RF/mmWave PCB Engineer to design and develop high-frequency printed circuit boards supporting RFIC and RF front-end systems. This role will focus on PCB architecture, layout, and signal integrity optimization for RF and mmWave applications. The position requires close collaboration with RFIC designers, system engineers, packaging teams, and test engineers to ensure robust performance from prototype through production.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop high-frequency PCBs for RF and mmWave systems supporting RFIC and RF front-end architectures, specifically in use cases up to 50GHz..
  • Perform PCB layout for high-speed and high-frequency circuits while maintaining signal integrity and minimizing loss.
  • Work with RFIC, packaging, and system teams to integrate RF components, amplifiers, and supporting circuitry.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate PCB materials, stack-ups, and transmission line structures for high-frequency performance.
  • Conduct signal integrity and electromagnetic simulations to validate PCB designs.
  • Support hardware bring-up, debugging, and RF measurement activities.
  • Document design methodologies, test results, and hardware performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • 1-3 years of experience designing high-frequency PCBs for RF or microwave systems.
  • Strong understanding of RF transmission lines, impedance matching, and signal integrity principles.
  • Must be willing to work full-time, onsite, in Atlanta, GA.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience designing PCBs for RF or mmWave systems including high power rf amplifiers, mixers, LNAs, or RF front-end modules.
  • Proficiency with PCB design tools such as Altium, Cadence Allegro, or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of high-frequency materials and stack-up design for RF applications.
  • Experience supporting RF hardware testing and measurement using laboratory equipment.

Benefits

  • Competitive Salary and Equity Package
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) and Sick Leave
