Department: American Legal Publishing (ALP) 

Location: Cincinnati, OH

Reports To: Director of Code Services

Company Summary: The International Code Council is the leading global source of model codes, standards, and building safety solutions. This includes product evaluation, accreditation, technology, training, and certification. ICC Codes, Standards, and solutions are used to ensure safe, affordable, and sustainable communities and buildings worldwide. While our roots are firmly planted in the development of the Codes and Standards, our growth allows us to offer many more services to support our Codes and Standards. 


Subsidiary Summary: American Legal Publishing provides ordinance codification (publishing current legislation into user-friendly and searchable organizational structures) and information management services (archiving, web-hosting and electronic file managing) to state and local governments. Located in downtown Cincinnati, American Legal’s staff of approximately 50 employees provides codification solutions to more than 2,000 clients across the country, ranging in size from Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Boston, to villages with populations less than 500.


Position Summary: We are seeking an editor in our Code Services Department, who will work in our Cincinnati office to create and edit various styles of codes. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating or updating manuscripts of municipal codes based on current local legislation.


Essential Functions:

  •  Organizing project materials
  •  Compiling editorial notes
  •  Editing word processing files to implement changes
  •  Producing a working draft
  •  Detailed proofreading for grammar, sense, consistency, spelling and format
  •  Production of camera-ready copy
  •  Maintaining electronic files of current codes of ordinances in a variety of formats
  •  Interacting with clients to provide solutions to codification issues
  •  Customer service follow-up with clients
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Essential Skills and Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism or a similar field.
  • Command of English grammar
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Highly organized and focused
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Proficient in word processing formats (Word Perfect, Adobe, Word)
  • Committed to producing quality work within assigned deadlines
  • Capable of juggling multiple projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer or desk 
  • Occasional standing, walking, and reaching to access files or office supplies 
  • Manual dexterity for typing, filing, and handling office equipment 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, documents) 
  • Visual acuity to read printed and digital materials 
  • Auditory ability to communicate effectively in person and over the phone 
  • May need to climb stairs in multi-level office building
