What is a self employed RN?

Self-employed Registered Nurses (RNs) are licensed nursing professionals who work independently, rather than being directly employed by hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare facilities. They may offer services such as home health care, consulting, case management, or wellness education. Self-employed RNs set their own schedules, negotiate contracts, and are responsible for managing their own business operations, including billing and compliance. This career path offers flexibility and autonomy, but also requires strong organizational and business skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a self employed RN?

To succeed as a Self Employed RN, you need a valid RN license, clinical expertise, and strong knowledge of healthcare regulations and best practices. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, billing software, and potentially telehealth platforms is important for managing independent practice. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and business management skills help distinguish outstanding self-employed nurses. These competencies are crucial to provide quality patient care, maintain regulatory compliance, and effectively manage the business aspects of independent nursing practice.

What are some common challenges faced by self employed RNs, and how can they be managed?

Self-employed RNs often encounter challenges such as managing inconsistent client workloads, handling administrative tasks like billing and scheduling, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations independently. To manage these challenges, many self-employed RNs use specialized software for scheduling and invoicing, stay updated on licensure and insurance requirements, and build strong professional networks for referrals. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with clients and setting boundaries can help create a more sustainable work-life balance.

What is the difference between Self Employed Rn vs Staff Nurse?

Employer & Industry UsageSelf-employed, contracts with multiple clients or agenciesHospitals, clinics, healthcare facilities

Self Employed Rns operate independently, managing their own schedules and clients, while Staff Nurses are employed by healthcare facilities with fixed shifts. Both roles require RN licensure, but their work environments and employment structures differ significantly.

How can a self-employed RN be self-employed?

A self-employed registered nurse (RN) can be self-employed by offering services independently, such as through freelance nursing, consulting, or telehealth. They typically need to obtain necessary licenses, set up a business structure, and manage their own scheduling and billing. This allows for flexible work arrangements outside traditional employment settings.

  • Collaborate Broadly: Partner with diverse hospital teams and DaVita clinical staff across different locations to ensure seamless patient transitions.
  • Drive Quality: Monitor high-acuity patients, adjust treatments on the fly, and ensure top-tier clinical outcomes.
  • Lead on the Go: Support and oversee patient care alongside Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) in ever-changing environments.

What to Expect as a Float RN:
  • Dynamic Scheduling: Daily schedules and locations may change based on patient needs, giving you the variety you crave. Shifts include regular and on-call hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Comprehensive Paid Training: No prior dialysis experience required! We provide all the specialized training you need to succeed in nephrology.
  • Constant Growth: You'll build relationships across multiple hospital systems, expanding your clinical network and expertise.

Requirements:
  • Current RN license in the state of practice.
  • ADN required; BSN preferred.
  • ICU, CCU, ER, or Med/Surg experience is highly beneficial for a float role, but not required.
  • CNN/CDN certification (preferred).
  • Must pass a color vision test (accommodations available).

What We Offer:
  • Health & Wellness: Medical, dental, vision, and a robust 401(k) match.
  • Work-Life Integration: Paid time off and PTO cash-out options.
  • Family Support: Parental leave, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), child/elder care resources, Headspace, and more.
  • Extras: Pet insurance and other unique perks.
  • Clinical Excellence: Work within a Joint Commission-accredited inpatient program.
  • Ongoing Development: Continuous career growth and specialized training opportunities within a global kidney care leader.

Full vaccination against COVID-19 may be required by hospitals in this program, which may include a booster when eligible.
Be the flexible force that hospitals rely on. Apply today to deliver critical, life-sustaining care as an Acute Care Float RN.
