Job Title: Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Coordinator
Reports to: Principal/ Executive Director of Academics
Department/School: RYSS at Pasadena
Exemption Status/Test: Exempt

Primary Purpose:

The SEL Coordinator is a newly established role at RYSS, created to lead and support the district-wide implementation of social-emotional learning initiatives in the absence of certified counselors. This position is responsible for building staff capacity, aligning SEL efforts with district priorities, and ensuring SEL is embedded into daily classroom practices, school culture, and community partnerships.


Key Responsibilities:

Professional Development & Capacity Building

  • Design and deliver professional development for teachers, staff, and campus leaders on evidence-based SEL practices aligned with the CASEL framework.
  • Provide coaching and support to educators on integrating SEL into instructional routines and classroom management.

Strategic Planning & Implementation

  • Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing monitoring of the district's SEL plan.
  • Collaborate with district and campus leadership to align SEL goals with academic and behavioral priorities.

Curriculum & Program Coordination

  • Coordinate SEL-related programs, curriculum, and resources across campuses (e.g., Lovescaping).
  • Support student leadership, peer mentoring, and other student-led initiatives that promote SEL competencies.

Data & Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze school climate data (e.g., TEA climate surveys, discipline trends) to inform SEL strategies and measure impact.
  • Use data to identify areas of need and adjust SEL programming accordingly.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Serve as a liaison between RYSS and external SEL partners, including Helping Hands and Baylor College of Medicine.
  • Foster partnerships with community-based organizations to enhance SEL supports and services.

Equity & Culturally Responsive Practices

  • Model and promote culturally responsive practices that affirm student identity and foster inclusive learning environments.
  • Advocate for equitable access to SEL supports for all students, particularly those from historically underserved communities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • SEL-related certifications or training preferred (e.g., CASEL-aligned programs, trauma-informed practices)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in education, counseling, or youth development
  • Experience designing and facilitating professional development
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and community organizations

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Deep understanding of SEL frameworks (e.g., CASEL), trauma-informed practices, and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills
