Job Description

The Security Officer II reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards 

  • Responsible with the direct overall daily operations of a specifically assigned Security Department duty shift within the site's Security Department when the shift's Resource Coordinator is not present 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • This position will serve as the shift leader in the absence of the Security Supervisor. 

  • Responsible for communicating regularly with their respective Security Supervisor, Program Manager, and other site leadership regarding Security needs. 

  • Responsible for the dissemination of information to assigned/scheduled Officers. 

  • Assists in identifying opportunities for improvement regarding safety and security issues on their shift. 

  • Assists the Security Supervisor as follows: performs general safety and security monitoring, providing recommendations to ensure compliance with NM safety policies as needed; provides operational oversight of campus specific security camera system and access control systems; and provides daily assessment of security risks within the NM campuses providing recommendations as appropriate. 

  • Must maintain personal knowledge of/with industry standards and technology trends in healthcare security.  

  • Responsible for the compilation of the operational shift's records/reports and collaborating with other departments to maintain a safe environment in NM facilities during their assigned shift. 

  • Must be able to build and maintain team cohesiveness on their shift 

  • Responsible for deploying and utilizing appropriate security resources throughout their shift. 

  • Proficient in and capable of a leadership role in any investigations of fire, theft, criminal activity and accidents on NM property as needed. 

  • Assists employees new to their shift with their orientation and training 

  • Assist employees with internal training, IAHSS testing, and all other education and competencies needs of the team. 

  • Acts as a Security leadership reference for shift associates. 

  • Adheres to, and assists, the Security Supervisor with the management of the Security Department's policies and procedures. 

  • Investigates/quells hospital incidents and disturbances to maintain patient, visitor, and employee security.  Notifies appropriate local police and fire as needed and within policy 

  • Prepares descriptive reports for supervisory personnel. 

  • Monitor patients for patient and employee safety as needed 

  • Ensure Officers on their respective shift maintain patient monitoring needs within standards 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned 

  • Assists with additional responsibilities and ownership roles i.e, vehicle maintenance, lost and found, Defensive Tactics in Healthcare assistant instructor, uniforms management, etc. 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

Education: 

  • Requires a high-school diploma or GED 

Licensure: 

  •  Valid driver's license. 

Certification: 

  • Completion of IAHSS Basic and Advanced certifications. 

  • Maintain IAHSS Basic certification 

  • Maintain IAHSS Advanced certification 

  • Current Basic Life Support Certification through American Heart Association within 9 months of hire. 

  • Successful completion of Northwestern Medicine Defensive Tactics in Healthcare within 6 months of hire. 

Experience:  

  • 6 months minimum, 1 year preferred experience working within NMHC Security Services. 

Behavioral Attributes: 

  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact effectively with a variety of individuals, including employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, police, etc. 

  • Writing skills necessary to complete reports and paperwork that meets departmental standards. 

Physical Demands: 

  • A physical demands test provides an objective way to identify if a candidate can meet the essential tasks for the job the candidate has applied for at Northwestern Medicine. The testing protocol was established with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). 

  • Job Role Requirement

    •  65 lbs lift 30 inch wide carry; Push/pull 75 lbs  

    • Physical ability and knowledge of how to operate a motor vehicle 

    • Physical ability to stand and walk during much of work shift patrolling hospital buildings and grounds.  

    • Physical ability to respond quickly to emergency situations that may include stair climbing or other physical exertion in the protection of patients, visitors, and staff.  

    • Physical ability to lift and assist with heavy objects occasionally.
