What is a security technical program manager?

A Security Technical Program Manager (STPM) is a professional responsible for leading and coordinating security-related projects and programs within an organization. They bridge the gap between technical security teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that security initiatives align with company goals and regulatory requirements. STPMs oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of security projects, manage cross-functional teams, and help develop strategies to mitigate risks. Their role often involves project management, technical expertise, risk assessment, and communication with multiple departments.

How does a security technical program manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a security initiative?

A Security Technical Program Manager (TPM) works closely with engineering, IT, compliance, and product teams to coordinate security projects. They facilitate communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring project requirements are clearly understood and deadlines are met. Security TPMs often lead meetings, track progress, resolve blockers, and align diverse teams toward shared security goals. This collaborative approach helps prioritize security initiatives within broader business objectives and ensures successful and timely implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a security technical program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security Technical Program Manager, you need expertise in information security principles, project management, and risk assessment, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and certifications such as CISSP or PMP. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, SIEM platforms, and security frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001) is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional initiatives and manage stakeholder expectations. These competencies are crucial for effectively coordinating security projects, mitigating risks, and aligning security strategies with organizational goals.

The Role: Technical Program Manager II
As a Technical Program Manager II, you will lead the end-to-end delivery of data center construction programs from early planning through commissioning and operational handover. This role exists to ensure hyperscale facilities are delivered on schedule, within scope, and aligned to Switch standards. You will coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage risk, and drive execution across complex construction environments. You are accountable for program performance within your assigned scope.
What You'll Do
  • Manage the full lifecycle of hyperscale data center construction programs, including pre-construction, design coordination, procurement tracking, construction, commissioning support, and operations handover.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, milestones, and execution plans.
  • Track scope, schedule, and cost performance against commitments.
  • Lead risk identification and maintain program risk registers.
  • Own mitigation plans and track risk resolution through project completion.
  • Manage change control processes, including evaluation of change orders and scope impacts.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, and design intent for alignment and constructability.
  • Coordinate submittals, RFIs, field changes, and design clarifications.
  • Partner with engineering, construction, commissioning, and operations teams to resolve issues.
  • Ensure compliance with internal standards and applicable codes.
  • Maintain dashboards and weekly reporting for leadership.
  • Highlight key risks, issues, and required decisions in executive updates.
  • Facilitate cross-functional coordination meetings and drive alignment.
  • Support punch-list completion and contractual closeout requirements.
  • Travel up to 30% as required.

This position may require the candidate/employee to undergo additional background checks and drug screenings prior to and during the course of employment in support of customer-specific deployments.
What We're Looking For
  • You take ownership of assigned programs and drive predictable outcomes.
  • You anticipate risks before they impact schedule or cost.
  • You remain calm and effective under pressure.
  • You communicate clearly across technical and executive audiences.
  • You manage ambiguity and shifting priorities without losing structure.
  • You influence stakeholders without direct authority.
  • You balance technical detail with program-level oversight.

What You'll Bring
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or related field.
  • 3๏ฟฝ6 years of experience managing construction projects.
  • Experience managing projects from pre-construction through handover.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Understanding of construction sequencing and field execution.
  • Experience using project management software such as MS Project, Primavera P6, Procore, or Smartsheet.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.

Preferred:
  • Experience in data center or mission-critical construction environments.
  • Experience in hyperscale or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and integrated systems testing.
  • PMP certification.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every preferred qualification.
