A security project manager’s responsibilities are to supervise the creation of security systems for companies and organizations to ensure the safety and protection of personnel, campus assets, and information. As a security project manager, you lead a team of security professionals to generate a plan of action to mitigate threats to the company. Your duties may also include helping a company create policies to improve site security, running safety drills and tests of the safety systems, and training staff on how to follow safety procedures and help improve security through individual action steps. You must also understand and apply any municipal, state, and federal regulations related to the installation and implementation of security equipment.
| Aspect | Security Project Manager | Security Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | PMP, CISSP, CISM | CompTIA Security+, CISSP, GIAC |
| Work Environment | Oversees security projects, manages teams, coordinates implementation | Monitors security systems, analyzes threats, responds to incidents |
| Employer & Industry Usage | IT firms, corporations, government agencies | Security operations centers, IT departments, consulting firms |
The main difference is that Security Project Managers focus on planning, executing, and closing security projects, ensuring timely delivery and stakeholder communication. Security Analysts primarily monitor and analyze security threats, responding to incidents and maintaining security systems. Both roles require relevant certifications and work within the cybersecurity industry, but their responsibilities and daily tasks differ significantly.

For more than 140 years, Johnson Controls has delivered performance where it really matters. Backed by advanced technology, lifecycle services and an industry‑leading field organization, we elevate customer performance, turn goals into real‑world results and help move society forward.
What you will doJohnson Controls is a global organization focused on smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings, and this role supports customers with secure, integrated solutions that help programs move forward with confidence. In Government Technologies Division, you will contribute technical depth, design rigor, and practical problem‑solving to PMO projects and programs. In this role, you will be responsible for generating system designs and estimates to support Government Technologies Division PMO projects and programs. You will analyze pre‑and post‑sale customer needs, determine system objectives and requirements, and develop solutions for new or existing applications. Success in this role means delivering accurate, customer‑focused designs that support program execution, technical alignment, and dependable outcomes.
How you will do itDevelop system designs and estimates for PMO projects and programs, supporting both pre‑sale and post‑sale activity. Design and review program‑related integrated systems for Government Technologies Division customers. Analyze customer requirements, define system objectives, and translate needs into workable technical solutions. Prepare technical take‑offs, scope details, submittal documentation, and requests for clarification as needed. Review equipment applications to ensure compatibility, completeness, and alignment with customer expectations. Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, working drawings, installation drawings, software, system programs, and product manuals. Troubleshoot system issues and provide high‑level technical support for internal teams and customers. Support bench testing, field programming, commissioning, and final acceptance documentation for integrated security solutions. Provide user training and mentoring support to field Installation and Service Teams as well as customers nationwide. Own the quality of your designs and estimates by validating assumptions, checking compatibility, and documenting solutions accurately from concept through final acceptance. Stay close to the work by collaborating with PMO stakeholders, field teams, and customers to understand real operating conditions and remove obstacles early. Use clear, candid problem‑solving when reviewing drawings, submittals, and system programs, then refine solutions through testing and technical feedback. Work as one team with sales, engineering, installation, service, and program management so solutions reflect diverse perspectives and deployment realities. Apply a practical, safety‑minded approach when supporting access control, intercom, CCTV, and related integrated systems. Keep documentation, estimates, and technical guidance current so program teams can move quickly with confidence.
What we look forRequired Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience. 5+ years of experience in technical support, design, pre‑sales engineering, or application support for electronic security, IT, or low‑voltage systems. Hands‑on experience with integrated systems such as access control, intercom, CCTV, or related security technologies. Proven ability to analyze customer needs, define system requirements, and develop solutions for new or existing applications. Experience preparing equipment and labor estimates, technical take‑offs, submittals, and supporting documentation. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and product documentation. Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to support complex system issues in a customer‑focused environment. Familiarity with federal government system requirements, including FIPS 201‑2 and HSPD‑12. Preferred Certified System Engineer ICAM PACS (CSEIP). Manufacturer certifications such as Hirsch, Bosch (IQSIGHT), Commend, or Radionix. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revu or Visio. Knowledge of Radionix intrusion panels.
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $85,000- 117,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
