Job description

The Security Department at High Point University is seeking a dedicated and professional Security Team Member. This role is essential to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Security Team Member is responsible for upholding university rules and regulations while ensuring the safety and well-being of the campus community. Provides personnel, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors within an assigned area of the University campus. Provides escort services, and other basic public assistance services as needed, and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties within assigned area. Remains alert to emergency situations and provides first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral if required.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; no previous experience required.
Experience/Training/Qualifications:
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • 1-year applicable security, law enforcement, military or 3 years of customer service experience preferred.
  • No motor vehicle moving violations within the past year and no alcohol-related convictions within the past 5 years
  • No felony convictions
  • Credit history will be performed.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical agility test, drug screening, medical and psychological assessment

Essential Functions:
  • Upholds and enforces High Point University (HPU) rules and regulations in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and Staff Handbooks
  • Responds to emergency calls
  • Conducts routine patrols of campus properties
  • Maintains positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating effectively with students, parents, faculty, co-workers and administration.
  • Assist with building unlocks for students, staff and faculty and contractors
  • Conducts routine mobile and foot patrols of campus properties
  • Emergency "First Responder" provides medical aid, e.g. AED, CPR, Narcan
  • Responds to fire alarms and emergency notifications, assess conditions, and evacuate buildings when necessary. Duties may require climbing stairs and navigating multi-level facilities.
  • Directs traffic on campus
  • Assists with special events
  • Perimeter protection to include vetting of incoming people on campus
  • Patrols assigned areas on foot, in assigned motor vehicles, or other specialized vehicles to ensure personnel, building, and equipment security.
  • Examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; uses University keys to open and close buildings; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
  • Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.
  • Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as campus police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.
  • Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or HPU rule violators.
  • Performs periodic checks of emergency call boxes and/or streetlights to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
  • May provide safe and efficient transportation to university employees, students and/or visitors, as requested, using an institutional vehicle.
  • Patrols and monitors assigned parking areas and/or parking garages to provide public security and assistance.
  • Maintains security controls for issued University keys; safeguards and controls issued University equipment.
  • Prepare routine, standardized reports.
  • Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  • Other duties as assigned by Chief of Police.
