Job description

TERMINAL MANAGER

Swartz Bay

The Opportunity

We are looking for a passionate, dynamic leader to oversee the day-to-day operation and administration of our Swartz Bay terminal. You are a leader driven to achieve outstanding results, while enforcing a culture of safety and quality service at all times. You are a self-starter who promotes teamwork amongst diverse groups of staff and maintain positive interactions, while providing coaching, mentoring, and motivation in support of individual performance objectives. 

The Role

Reporting to the Regional Manager, Terminal Operations, Swartz Bay, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

Manages day to day operations by:

  • Implementing corporate safety and risk assessment processes/initiatives
  • Ensuring safe practices in terminal operations and a safe working environment for all terminal staff, including verifying that all staff is properly trained
  • Working with Supervisors to ensure daily adherence to all relevant practices and policies including the security provisions of the Transport Canada Security Regulations
  • Ensuring vehicles are checked for dangerous goods, oversize and weight restrictions, advising vessels and completing documentation
  • Reviewing financial and other performance reports, planning and monitoring watch labor and non-labor expenditures, approving overtime and preparing reports including watch/terminal month end variance and quarterly financial reports
  • Coordinating revenue processes including ensuring security and deposit of revenue
  • Ensuring terminal facilities, buildings, grounds, and equipment are maintained and cleaned to a high standard
  • Conducting rounds of the terminal, identifying unusual activity, security breaches, unsafe conditions, and reporting/rectifying as necessary
  • Participating in joint site safety committee meetings as a management representative
  • Coordinating the terminal response in the event of an emergency
  • Managing and monitoring absenteeism, performance, workplace and customer injuries
  • Ensuring a high level of environmental standards

Manages the customer service function by:

  • Being fully versed in the company’s Customer Service Enhancement program
  • Ensuring staff maintain positive customer relations to build loyalty
  • Enforcing the employee dress code and ensuring a high standard of cleanliness of terminal facilities
  • Promptly responding to customer concerns and taking appropriate action on suggestions to improve service

Manages the Human Resources / Employee Relations activities by:

  • Assisting, hiring terminal staff in a manner consistent with company policies and procedures with the support Human Resource
  • Establishing clear performance plans for each subordinate, regularly evaluating and documenting performance, including reviewing and evaluating probationary employees to determine their ultimate acceptability as an employee at the worksite or of the company
  • Applying the provisions of the collective agreement and acting in accordance with delegated authorities on matters of discipline by conducting fact finding meetings, coaching sessions and applying progressive discipline when deemed necessary and support Regional Manager
  • Promoting effective teamwork through timely and effective communication in matters relevant to employees
  • Working with crewing on schedules and workforce needs

 

Overseeing the daily administration of the terminals by:

  • Overseeing, auditing, and issuing directives to correct substandard conditions or work practices
  • Overseeing and authorizing work orders for maintenance and repairs to terminal assets
  • Facilitating business relationships with contractors involved in supplying services to the terminals

What you bring to the team

You have a Post-Secondary diploma in business administration (or related field) or a suitable combination of education and experience. You have a minimum of three years’ experience managing a passenger transportation terminal, preferably marine transport and demonstrated experience in creating and managing large operating and capital budgets. Additionally, you have experience in implementing strategic initiatives and leading both unionized and non-unionized employees.

Additional information

The target salary range: $98,500-$123,100 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
