To excel in Security Governance, a strong understanding of information security principles, risk management, and regulatory compliance is essential, often supported by a degree in cybersecurity or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks like ISO 27001, NIST, and certifications such as CISSP or CISM are highly valued, along with experience using governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) tools. Outstanding analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals influence policy and collaborate across teams. These skills are crucial for establishing robust security policies, minimizing organizational risk, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in Security Governance, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Security Governance often encounter challenges such as aligning security policies with business objectives, managing compliance with evolving regulations, and fostering a security-conscious culture across diverse teams. Addressing these challenges requires ongoing communication with stakeholders, regular policy reviews, and effective training programs to ensure everyone understands their role in maintaining security. Collaboration with IT, legal, and business units is essential to implement governance frameworks that are both practical and robust, enabling organizations to mitigate risks while supporting operational goals.

What is Security Governance?

Security Governance refers to the framework and processes that ensure an organization's information security strategies are aligned with its business objectives, regulatory requirements, and risk management practices. It involves establishing policies, roles, responsibilities, and oversight mechanisms to protect information assets effectively. Security governance provides direction and accountability, making sure that security initiatives are well-coordinated and that risks are managed at the highest level. This helps organizations maintain trust, comply with laws, and respond effectively to evolving threats.

Job Title: Vice President, Product Marketing - Data Security & Governance

Location: Sunnyvale, CA (Hybrid)

The Opportunity

Proofpoint is the global leader in Human and Agent-Centric Security. We are seeking a Vice President of Product Marketing to serve as the strategic architect and GTM engine for our Data Security & Governance business unit.

This is a high-stakes leadership role for a "Doer-Manager" who thrives at the intersection of Strategy, Product, and Sales. As the primary marketing counterpart to the EVP/GM of the Business Unit and the SVP of Product Management, you will define how the world's largest enterprises secure data in the age of AI Agents.

The Mission

The world of data security is undergoing a fundamental shift: as data migrates from static repositories to autonomous, agent-driven workflows, traditional perimeter defenses have become obsolete. Security is no longer defined by where data lives, but by how humans and AI agents interact with it. Proofpoint is uniquely positioned to lead this evolution. We provide the only platform that converges Data Security (DLP, DSPM, Insider Threat) with Intelligent Governance (Archiving, Compliance) at a global scale. As the definitive standard for the Secure Agentic Workspace, Proofpoint ensures that the world's most regulated organizations can embrace the future of AI without compromising their data, their reputation, or their regulatory integrity.

Your Responsibilities

  • Category Strategy & Narrative: Define and own the global narrative for Human and Agent-Centric Data Security. You will articulate a vision that bridges the gap between proactive data protection (Security) and regulatory integrity (Governance) across both human and autonomous actors.
  • Strategic Product Interlock: Partner lockstep with Product Management to influence the roadmap. You will translate technical innovations in DSPM and Agentic Data Governance into business-critical value propositions that resonate with both the CISO and the Chief Risk Officer.
  • Leadership & Organizational Scale: Manage, mentor, and inspire a high-performing, distributed Product Marketing organization. You will foster a culture characterized by technical depth, high-velocity execution, and an "AI-first" mindset.
  • Market Dominance & Competitive Edge: Own the "win." You will direct the creation of battlecards and strategic plays that dismantle legacy competitors by proving that true data security requires deep visibility into human behavior and agentic intent.
  • Executive Evangelism: Serve as the primary external face of the business unit. You will represent Proofpoint's vision to industry analysts, customer advisory boards, and at major industry keynotes, confidently navigating topics from Autonomous Agent risks to SEC regulations

What You Bring to the Team

  • 15+ Years of Strategic Experience: A proven track record in B2B cybersecurity marketing, including 8+ years in senior leadership (VP or Sr. Director).
  • Domain Mastery: Deep, "hands-on" knowledge of the Data Security landscape, including DLP, CASB, SSE, and DSPM.
  • Governance Fluency: A sophisticated understanding of the relationship between Security and Compliance. You can speak credibly about archiving and risk without losing your edge as a security leader.
  • The "Doer-Manager" Hybrid: You take pride in your ability to manage large, complex teams while remaining "close to the metal"-capable of reviewing a keynote abstract or a launch blog with a practitioner's eye.
  • Scale Competency: Experience operating within a high-growth public company or a late-stage Private Equity environment. You understand the cadence of analyst relations, quarterly GTM forecasting, and the path to $5B ARR.

Why Proofpoint

We protect the people, data, and AI of the world's largest organizations-including over 85% of the Fortune 100. As we march toward $5B ARR, you will lead the charge in defining the Secure Agentic Workspace, where security and governance are invisible enablers of innovation.
