Job description
The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) is the association that represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies. Our members provide electricity for more than 250 million Americans and operate in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. As a whole, the electric power industry supports more than 7 million jobs in communities across the United States.
EEI employees are required to work in office Monday-Thursday, and have the option to work remotely on Fridays.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DIRECTOR, ENERGY SECURITY AND MILITARY PARTNERSHIPS:
National security and energy resilience are among the most consequential issues facing the electric power industry. The reliable delivery of electricity to military installations and federal facilities is not merely a business priority-it is a critical component of U.S. defense readiness and homeland security.
Reporting to the Managing Director, Security and Resilience, the Director, Energy Security and Military Partnerships serves as EEI's senior subject matter expert on the intersection of electric power and national security. Through policy engagement, strategic advocacy, and direct collaboration with DoD and federal agencies, the Director promotes and defends the authorities, partnerships, and infrastructure investments that enable member companies to deliver secure, reliable energy to military installations and federal facilities. This role works directly with the SVP for Industry Operations and the Managing Director for Security and Resilience who serve as EEI's primary liaisons between investor-owned electric companies and senior representatives of the U.S. defense and national security communities, ensuring the electric power sector is recognized as an indispensable partner in U.S. defense readiness, grid resilience, and critical infrastructure protection.
Other important responsibilities of the Director, Energy Security and Military Partnerships, include:
- Lead initiatives to advance EEI member companies as trusted energy and infrastructure partners to DoD and federal agencies, strengthening the role of investor-owned utilities in supporting national defense, mission readiness, and critical infrastructure security.
- Analyze, monitor, and advocate for authorities, contracting mechanisms, and funding tools that enable member companies to deliver secure, resilient energy to military installations and federal facilities, including through programs such as MILCON, ESPC, and UESC.
- Monitor and analyze federal policy, national security directives, DoD energy strategy, procurement trends, and grid resilience priorities to identify emerging risks and opportunities for EEI members, and translate findings into actionable guidance and policy positions.
- Plan, organize, and lead engagement between EEI members and senior DoD and federal agency officials through working groups, interagency roundtables, tabletop exercises, and resilience planning efforts to strengthen energy security partnerships and advance shared national security priorities.
- Develop policy documents, briefing materials, and strategic analyses on energy security and military partnership issues for senior EEI leadership, member executives, and federal agency audiences.
- Represent EEI at national security forums, DoD energy conferences, and interagency working groups; track and communicate developments in federal energy policy, defense infrastructure investment, and critical infrastructure protection that affect EEI members.
- Serve as EEI's subject matter expert on energy security, military installations, grid resilience, and defense energy policy, providing technical guidance and strategic counsel to EEI members, federal partners, and external stakeholders.
REQUIRED & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in public policy, national security, engineering, political science, energy studies, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 10-12 years of experience in national security, defense energy, critical infrastructure, or federal energy policy, with direct engagement with DoD or federal agencies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of DoD energy strategy, federal energy and infrastructure policy, national security priorities, and grid resilience planning; familiarity with programs such as MILCON, ESPC, UESC, or Executive Order 13693/14057 frameworks preferred.
- Ability to build consensus and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including executives, federal partners, and technical experts.
- Strong communication, facilitation, writing, and analytical skills, with experience preparing senior-level briefing materials and content.
- Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Travel required approximately 15-20% for federal engagement, DoD installations, security conferences, and industry events.
HOW TO APPLY
Interested applicants should apply online through EEI's career site. EEI uses Clear Company as our applicant tracking system. An application is considered when all required fields are completed.
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this role is $130,000 - $175,000. Starting annual salary will be determined on individual qualifications. EEI also offers an annual performance incentive which is prorated for mid-year start dates. This incentive is typically up to 10% of the base salary. We offer a competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, paid time off, tuition assistance, wellness incentives and programs, transportation subsidy, and professional development opportunities.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY DEMANDS
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. EEI is committed to providing a productive and safe environment. To achieve that goal, we conduct background and reference check investigations for all final applicants being considered for employment. Equal Opportunity Employment M/D/F/V.
