We approach problems with creativity and innovation.  The Glen Allen corporate headquarters of Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Controller to join our growing practice.  We are looking for a motivated candidate with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong team.  

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate to achieve the company’s goals and objectives.
  • Recommend and execute improvements to processes and systems for enhanced user experience while maintaining a system of internal control.
  • Project Manager for Deltek Vantagepoint and related financial systems, including security controls, upgrades, project prioritization, and accounting maintenance.
  • Maintain documentation for current financial processes and policies.
  • Manage the accuracy and productivity of the day-to-day activities of accounts payable, cash, revenue recognition, accounts receivable, fixed assets, payroll, general, and entity accounting (to include joint ventures).
  • Manage treasury related activities and relationships with banking partners. 
  • Cash management, including monitoring debt levels, compliance with debt covenants, and cash forecasting.
  • Oversee the financial close process and related financial reporting. Ensure compliance with accounting standards.
  • Develop indirect cost rate schedules, facilitate audits and submissions to government entities on a timely basis. Remain current with DOT and FAR requirements. 
  • Oversee financial and governmental audits for the provision of information, resolving issues and reviewing draft reports.
  • Support annual corporate (and associated companies) income tax preparation with external tax firm.
  • Oversee other tax filings: business, real estate, personal property, and income; as well as engineering firm licenses, for all entities.
  • Team with business units to deliver accurate and timely financial reporting and dashboards.
  • Maintain a financial and governmental compliance function and process to ensure company compliance with such regulations.
  • Lead financial integrations for any mergers and acquisition activities.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA certification
  • At least 10 years of hands-on accounting managerial experience, preferably within the professional services industry
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 606 Revenue Recognition standards
  • At least 5 years of Controller level experience or similar
  • Detailed knowledge of FAR, DFARS, CAS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong customer service and team building mindset
  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement
  • History of working with multiple business units with varying business models
  • Demonstrated history of process improvements through automation or improving the end-user experience

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

The compensation range for this role is between $150,000 to $200,000 annually. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
