Job description

About Treeline

Treeline is building the Modern IT Operating System a software- and AI-native foundation that redefines how IT, security, and compliance are delivered. Rather than layering AI on top of decades-old workflows, we rebuilt the MSP operating model from the ground up, with software as the foundation. Our AI-enhanced 24/7 help desk delivers 80% faster response times and a 95% reduction in error rates vs. traditional industry standard.

We operate in a $200B+ MSP market where 40,000+ providers still run on manual coordination and reactive ticketing. Treeline replaces that with a centralized software architecture automating routine operations while elevating human experts to focus on architecture, risk, and strategy. We serve growth-stage companies, with deep strength in regulated verticals (SOC 2, HIPAA, CMMC).

Through a combination of organic and inorganic expansion strategy, Treeline is growing fast. We're backed by a16z ($25M Series A) and we've built a team with deep experience at the intersection of software and services, with a team of IT / security services industry-veterans (e.g. Evergreen, Lyra) and top university graduates (Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley).

Job Summary:

As our Controller, you'll be the operational backbone of Treeline's finance function running the day-to-day engine (accounts payable, corporate spend, reconciliations, and month-end close) while building the systems that let it scale. This is a mission-critical, foundational hire: you'll bring existing finops experience and pair it with a modern, AI-native tool stack to turn manual work into repeatable processes. You'll get a front-row seat to a fast-moving, multi-entity rollup and a clear path to grow with the function as the company scales. If you're detail-obsessed, dependable and hungry to build the systems behind a scaling finance org, this role has room to grow with the company as much as you can.

Responsibilities include:

  • [Ownership & Partnership] Take end-to-end ownership of finance operations in an anchor finance role, owning reporting, expense management, books and records and other business processes end-to-end, providing dependable partnership to leadership in scaling the finance operation
  • [Systems & Automation] Own the finance tech stack (ERP + AP / spend tools), working with Head of Finance to establish and maintain repeatable process and clear documentation to drive scalability for finance operations
  • [Financial Statements] Produce accurate, GAAP-compliant financials (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) by owning all accounting processes and book closing cycle across all entities, from journal entries, accruals, prepaids to closing checklist documentation
  • [Multi-entity Reporting] Fluent with multi-entity reporting and consolidation across operating entities, owning intercompany transactions, entity-level coding and parent cost allocation
  • [Payroll] Manage payroll processing across entities with PEO provider, maintaining accurate coding, accruals and reconciliation of employee compensation, benefits and contractor payments
  • [Cash & Treasury] Manage cash across entities and bank accounts weekly cash positioning and payment runs, supporting the Head of Finance on forecasting
  • [Entity & Corporate Governance] Own the administrative backbone of the legal entity structure across Treeline and acquired entities, maintaining corporate records repository including formation documents, corporate org chart, state / foreign qualifications, annual reports / franchise-tax filings, among others
  • [Audit & Tax] Own the external audit and tax relationships end-to-end serving as the point of contact for auditors and tax preparers. Coordinate federal and multi-state income, franchise, and sales-and-use tax filings across all entities and manage 1099 and information-return cycles

What you bring:

  • [Experience] 4+ years of experience in finance, accounting or operations role
  • [Accounting Expertise] CPA (or actively CPA-track) with fluency in US GAAP and financial statement preparation. Strong command of the financial reporting process, from journal entries, accruals and prepaids to balance-sheet reconciliation and revenue recognition
  • [System Fluency] Experience owning modern enterprise ERPs (Rillet, Campfire, NetSuite), AR / invoicing platforms (ChargeBee, Recurly) and AP / spend management platforms (Ramp, Bill.com)
  • [Controls Mindset] You bring a controls-and-audit-trails mindset, with hands-on experience implementing segregation of duties, approval thresholds, payment / vendor safeguards (bank-detail verification, dual approval) and fraud prevention into everyday processes
  • [Coachability] Willingness to learn new technologies and adopt a data-first (vs. spreadsheet-first) approach on a modern, AI-native tech stack
  • [Communication] Exceptional written and verbal communication skills - you can explain numbers to non-accountants and hold a firm line with vendors, auditors and internal stakeholders
  • [Startup Mindset] You thrive in a fast-paced environment where the playbook is still being written and are comfortable with ambiguity
  • [Nice to Have] Experience with M&A integration and multi-entity consolidation
  • [Nice to Have] Literacy with advanced data analytics tools including SQL and Python - or the appetite to build it
