What is a security camera programmer?

Security Camera Programmers are professionals who specialize in configuring, programming, and maintaining surveillance camera systems. They work with both hardware and software, ensuring cameras are set up correctly, integrated with security networks, and function according to client requirements. Their responsibilities may include installing cameras, setting up recording schedules, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring video data is securely stored and accessible. They often collaborate with security teams to design and implement comprehensive surveillance solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a security camera programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security Camera Programmer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, C++, or Java), knowledge of network protocols, and experience with video surveillance systems, typically supported by a relevant degree or technical certifications. Familiarity with video management software (VMS), IP camera configuration tools, and security frameworks is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the reliable development, integration, and maintenance of complex security camera systems, safeguarding assets and data.

What are some common challenges security camera programmers face when integrating new surveillance systems into existing networks?

Security Camera Programmers often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new cameras and legacy systems, ensuring secure data transmission, and minimizing downtime during installation. Job description

Full-Stack .NET Developer (Security Camera Platform)

Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time

Description

Full-Stack .NET Developer (Security Camera Platform)

Reliant Safety was founded in 2009 to provide comprehensive property security and management solutions for the affordable housing market nationwide. Reliant Safety currently maintains and monitors over 33,000 cameras across 20 states, which support approximately 50,000 residential units.

Summary/Objective: We are looking for a full-stack .NET developer to take ownership of and expand a production monitoring platform.

The platform is already live and in active use, but there is a substantial roadmap of new capabilities and supporting applications to build. You will be the primary engineer responsible for evolving the existing services, hardening them for scale, and designing new components - from background ingestion services to reporting tools and operator-facing features.

This is a hands-on role with broad ownership across the stack: backend APIs, real-time messaging, background workers, third-party and device integrations, cloud infrastructure, data pipelines, and internal tooling.

Classification: Exempt

Hybrid Schedule: 3 Days in the office/2 days' work from home

Travel required based on operational need

Location: New York, NY 10022

Essential function/Responsibilities: duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • A web dashboard and API for real-time push to the browser and a relational data layer.
  • Background ingestion services that capture events from external systems and devices and forward results to the dashboard.
  • System and device integrations that connect to third-party control systems and networked devices over a mix of REST and SOAP/event-streaming APIs, including session handling, versioned endpoints, and resilience to unreliable connections.
  • CRM integration for creating and tracking records tied to verified incidents.
  • A Python data and reporting pipeline that consolidates activity logs from multiple source servers into a unified dataset, performs gap and anomaly analysis, generates formatted Excel reports, and delivers them automatically on a schedule via email.
  • Internal diagnostic and test tools used to validate connectivity and trigger events during deployment and troubleshooting.
  • Standalone projects for sister companies (as needed).

Requirements:

  • Strong C# and .NET experience; comfortable with ASP.NET Core web APIs and long-running background/worker services.
  • Real-time application experience with SignalR (or comparable WebSocket-based messaging) for live updates to the browser.
  • Experience integrating with third-party REST and SOAP APIs, including auth, sessions, versioned endpoints, and unreliable network conditions.
  • Azure experience - application hosting (e.g., App Service), blob storage, configuration, and deployment.
  • Database experience with Azure SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and SQLite - schema design, query optimization, migrations, and choosing the right store for cloud-hosted versus embedded/edge scenarios.
  • Networking proficiency - DNS, SSL/TLS certificates, ports and firewalls, NAT/port-forwarding, and general troubleshooting of connectivity across services and devices.
  • Python experience for data processing and automation - building ETL/reporting pipelines, working with tabular data (e.g., pandas), generating documents/spreadsheets, and scheduling unattended jobs.
  • Front-end competence: JavaScript, HTML, and CSS sufficient to extend and debug a real-time operator dashboard.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with networked hardware and event-driven systems (IP cameras, ONVIF/RTSP, access-control or building-automation systems, or similar).
  • Computer-vision or ML inference integration experience. Experience with YOLO, ONNX, and PyTorch.
  • Desktop application development (e.g., WPF) for building internal diagnostic tooling.
  • CRM integration experience.

Salary Range: $150,000 - $175,000

Benefits:

  • Medical Insurance: 100% of medical benefits paid for employees only
  • Voluntary dental and vision plan options
  • Bonus Eligible
  • 401(K) available plus company match
