Title: Security Guard
Job Purpose Statement: The High School Security Guard is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff, as well as protecting district property. The position supports the enforcement of school rules and regulations as outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook and implements district security procedures. The Security Guard greets and assists visitors at the main entrance, ensures a professional and welcoming experience for guests, and processes all visitors through the District's Visitor Management System to verify identity and ensure compliance with district safety and security requirements before authorizing entry into the building.
Supervision Received: The security guard will work in close connection with the School Resource Officer and the School Safety Unit of the Fairfield Police Department, other members of the school security team, the deans of the high school, and the administrative team of the high school. This position takes day-to-day direction from the head principal of the school while reporting to the Executive Director of Operations or their designee.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Monitor key areas of the school as designated by the principal, including but not limited to:
    • Serve as the primary security presence at the school's main entrance, greeting visitors and maintaining a safe, welcoming, and secure environment.
    • Verify visitor identification and process all guests through the District's Visitor Management System in accordance with district safety and security protocols.
    • Control building access and monitor entrances and exits, reporting suspicious or unauthorized activity to administration.
    • Monitor and supervise designated areas of the school, including hallways, stairwells, cafeterias, parking lots, bus loading/unloading areas, restrooms, assemblies, and other locations as assigned.
    • Assist in maintaining student safety and orderly conduct by enforcing school rules and regulations as outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook.
    • Respond to security concerns, emergencies, and incidents, and document and report issues as required.
    • Collaborate with administrators, staff, students, and visitors to promote a safe and positive school environment.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or designee.
  • Maintain the security office and functions of the office, including but not limited to:
    • Issuing student ID badges
    • Operating school security camera monitoring stations
    • Operating school security equipment
      • Metal detectors
      • Weapons detection systems
      • Other equipment as needed
    • Maintaining the main office lost and found items
    • Working with deans to conduct investigations around student theft, vandalism, fighting, parking violations, unauthorized leaving or entering school grounds, etc.
    • Photographing, documenting, and preserving/confiscating contraband as warranted
    • Maintaining and issuing staff parking passes
    • Maintaining and issuing staff walkie-talkies per the administration's directives
  • Maintain the security office and functions of the office, including but not limited to:

    • Operating school security equipment

    • Help problem-solve issues related to school visitors and software related to visitor badges
  • Work with school administration and staff to operationalize all safety drills and procedures regarding the following events: Lockdown, Relocation, Evacuation, Reunification, and others deemed necessary by the Fairfield Police and Board of Education.
  • Establish positive rapport and interact with students throughout the school, maintain high visibility so that students feel comfortable reporting issues, providing information, and asking questions. The presence and visibility of the security guard is one of the key deterrents for students to violate school rules and ways to promote positive contributions to the school community.

Other Job Requirements:
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance
  • Wear and maintain district-issued security uniform and report the need for replacement.
  • Work with other security staff to maintain proper monitoring of the front door and lobby.
  • Assist with student assemblies and managing student seating and safe flow in and out of spaces
  • Help new or substitute SRO be up to date on information regarding school and students
  • Work with Main Office and Head Principal's secretary to be aware of important events on the calendar to anticipate security needs
  • Report any item needing immediate attention to Principal and the Executive Director of Operations or their designee
  • Ensure outside visitors are following school procedures, including vendors working for Fairfield Public Schools
  • Consult with staff on security-related issues
  • Enforce use of "the boot" for unauthorized parking
  • Attend training sessions or professional development related to school safety and security

Minimum Qualifications Required:
  • High school diploma
  • Background/experience in security
  • Large event monitoring experience
  • Previous experience in law enforcement is preferred but not required
  • Security Officer Certification Identification Card
  • NIMS IS-100C certified preferred but not required
  • Valid CPR/AED certification required

Full time-35 hours per week
194 day work year
Salary up to $30.00/hr DOE
