Their work helps safeguard sensitive data and maintain the integrity of information systems.

What do security analysts do?

Security analysts evaluate information systems and recommend security measures and protocols to protect a company’s sensitive data from security threats. Security administrators implement their recommendations and put suggested protocols into action. As a security analyst, your job duties include monitoring security access, performing audits of internal and external network security programs, analyzing breaches to inform future security system measures, and training colleagues in security awareness and proper procedures. You also collaborate with outside vendors on security plans, which may include website applications, container, or cloud-based solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a security analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security Analyst, you need a solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, risk assessment, and network security, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SIEM platforms, intrusion detection systems, and certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or CISSP are commonly required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving abilities help Security Analysts excel in identifying vulnerabilities and responding to threats. These skills are crucial for protecting organizational assets, ensuring compliance, and maintaining a robust security posture.

What are some common challenges security analysts face when responding to security incidents, and how can they effectively manage these situations?

Security Analysts often encounter challenges such as rapidly evolving threats, the need to analyze large volumes of data, and coordinating responses across different teams. Responding quickly while accurately diagnosing incidents requires excellent technical skills and clear communication. To manage these situations effectively, successful analysts prioritize continuous learning, use automation tools to streamline repetitive tasks, and establish well-defined incident response procedures. Collaborating with IT, legal, and management teams is also crucial for a coordinated and effective response.

Job description

Position Title:
Zero Trust Security Analyst
Location:
Vienna, VA or Pensacola, FL
Position Status:
Contract W2
Pay Rate:
$55.00/hour
Position Description:
Seneca Resources is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Zero Trust Security Analyst to support a large-scale enterprise Zero Trust transformation initiative. This role is ideal for cybersecurity professionals with experience in network security analysis, identity and access management, firewall policy review, and Zero Trust architecture support.
The ideal candidate will play a critical role in analyzing existing network security and identity access configurations to determine what can be reused, refined, or redesigned to support modern Zero Trust security policies. This position focuses on security analysis, discovery, documentation, and readiness assessment rather than hands-on rule implementation.
You will collaborate closely with Zero Trust Engineers, IAM teams, application owners, and network security teams to ensure policies align with least-privilege principles while minimizing operational disruption and unnecessary duplication of controls.
This is an excellent opportunity for professionals passionate about cybersecurity strategy, Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), identity-based security, and enterprise security modernization.
Key Responsibilities:
Zero Trust Discovery & Security Analysis
  • Analyze enterprise firewall rules, network segmentation policies, address groups, and identity-based access controls to support Zero Trust initiatives.
  • Review existing identity sources including Active Directory (AD), Entra ID, RBAC models, and IGA structures to identify reusable access models.
  • Evaluate application access patterns across web, API, database, console, and internal services environments.
  • Identify overly permissive security rules, policy gaps, and overlapping controls requiring remediation.
Zero Trust Readiness & Policy Assessment
  • Assess existing security controls and determine readiness for Zero Trust enforcement.
  • Recommend reuse or redesign of firewall policies, user groups, application definitions, and security objects.
  • Validate proposed Zero Trust access requirements using least-privilege security principles.
  • Support application onboarding and Zero Trust policy alignment initiatives.
Documentation & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Produce detailed security analysis documentation outlining:
    • Current-state security configurations
    • Reusable controls and access structures
    • Net-new security objects and dependencies
  • Partner with Zero Trust Engineering and security operations teams to support implementation planning.
  • Maintain audit-ready traceability between applications, security objects, identity groups, and Zero Trust policies.
  • Assist with compliance reviews, security assessments, and governance initiatives.
Required Skills/Education:
  • 5+ years of experience in cybersecurity, network security analysis, IAM, or Zero Trust security environments.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise network security fundamentals including firewalls, security zones, and Layer 4/Layer 7 policies.
  • Experience analyzing enterprise firewall rule bases such as Palo Alto Networks or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with identity and access management concepts including Active Directory, Entra ID, RBAC, and group-based access controls.
  • Ability to interpret complex security configurations and translate findings into actionable technical requirements.
  • Strong documentation, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience working within enterprise security, infrastructure, or cloud transformation programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) frameworks or user-based firewall policies.
  • Exposure to IAM, Identity Governance & Administration (IGA), or access governance tools.
  • Familiarity with CMDB platforms, service onboarding workflows, and application dependency mapping.
  • Prior experience supporting security audits, compliance initiatives, or risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of least-privilege access models and modern Zero Trust architecture principles.
Why Join This Opportunity?
  • High-impact cybersecurity initiative supporting enterprise Zero Trust transformation.
  • Collaborative environment working alongside engineering, IAM, and security architecture teams.
  • Opportunity to influence modern access control and network security strategy.
  • Long-term project stability with multiple openings available.
  • Competitive hourly compensation and strong career growth potential.
