As of Jun 22, 2026, the average hourly pay for secret shoppers in the United States is $17.85, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.11 and $18.27 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges Secret Shoppers face during assignments, and how can they overcome them?

Secret Shoppers often encounter challenges such as maintaining anonymity while gathering detailed information, remembering specific criteria for evaluation, and managing multiple assignments with tight deadlines. To overcome these, it's helpful to thoroughly review assignment guidelines beforehand, take discreet notes immediately after visits, and use organizational tools or apps to track tasks. Building strong observation skills and practicing subtlety can also help ensure accurate, unbiased reporting without drawing attention.

What are secret shoppers?

Secret shoppers, also known as mystery shoppers, are individuals hired by companies to visit their stores, restaurants, or other service locations anonymously. Their job is to evaluate the quality of service, cleanliness, employee behavior, and overall customer experience by acting as regular customers. Secret shoppers report their findings back to the company, which uses this feedback to identify areas for improvement. This helps businesses maintain high standards and ensure consistent customer satisfaction.

How do I get a job being a Secret Shopper?

To become a secret shopper, you can sign up with legitimate mystery shopping companies that hire individuals to evaluate customer service and store conditions. These companies often require you to complete a registration process, pass a background check, and sometimes complete training or provide sample reports. Having good observational skills and attention to detail is important for success in this role.

What is the difference between Secret Shoppers vs Mystery Shoppers?

Search IntentCompare, evaluate customer serviceEvaluate, assess customer experience

Both Secret Shoppers and Mystery Shoppers are used to assess customer service quality in various industries. While the terms are often used interchangeably, Secret Shoppers typically focus on discreet evaluations of overall customer experience, whereas Mystery Shoppers may have more specific assignments. Both roles require no formal certifications and are employed by market research firms and retailers to improve service standards.

Do secret shoppers really make money?

Secret shoppers are paid for evaluating businesses, and their earnings vary depending on the assignments and company. Typically, they earn a small fee per visit or task, often supplemented with reimbursements or incentives, but they usually do not generate substantial income solely from this work. It is generally considered a part-time or supplemental activity rather than a full-time income source.

What is the best Secret Shopper to work for?

There is no definitive 'best' company for secret shoppers, as opportunities vary based on location, pay, and assignments. Reputable firms like BestMark, IntelliShop, and Secret Shopper are well-known in the industry and often provide legitimate work with clear instructions and fair compensation. Job seekers should research company reviews and verify legitimacy before applying.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Secret Shopper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Secret Shopper, you need keen observation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow specific assignment guidelines, often with no formal education required but some employers may prefer prior retail experience. Familiarity with online reporting systems and mobile apps used for submitting evaluations is typically necessary. Strong communication, objectivity, and reliability are standout soft skills for providing accurate and unbiased feedback. These skills are important to ensure that businesses receive actionable insights to improve customer service and operational standards.

How much money do mystery shoppers get paid?

Mystery shoppers typically earn between $10 and $25 per hour, with some assignments paying a flat fee ranging from $5 to $50. Pay rates vary based on the complexity of the task, location, and the company hiring, and shoppers often receive reimbursements for purchases made during evaluations.
