Their expertise in integrating security into development pipelines, along with security clearances, makes them valuable for organizations handling sensitive information, leading to strong job growth and competitive salaries.

What is a Secret Cleared DevSecOps Engineer?

A Secret Cleared DevSecOps Engineer is an IT professional who integrates security practices into the software development and operations (DevOps) process while holding a 'Secret' level security clearance, typically required for working on sensitive government or defense projects. These engineers are responsible for automating security measures, ensuring compliance with security policies, and maintaining secure development pipelines. Their clearance allows them to access classified information necessary for their work, making them essential for secure government or defense software development environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Secret Cleared DevSecOps Engineer?

To thrive as a Secret Cleared DevSecOps Engineer, you need expertise in software development, security best practices, automation, and experience with cloud infrastructure, typically supported by a relevant degree and an active Secret security clearance. Proficiency with CI/CD tools like Jenkins, Kubernetes, Docker, security scanning tools, and configuration management systems such as Ansible or Terraform is essential. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills are crucial for integrating security seamlessly into development and operations processes. These skills ensure the delivery of secure, reliable systems that meet stringent government standards and safeguard sensitive information.

Does a secret cleared Devsecops engineer help get a job?

Having a secret clearance can enhance a DevSecOps engineer’s job prospects by demonstrating trustworthiness and security clearance eligibility, which are often required for government or defense-related projects. Additionally, skills in automation, security tools, and cloud platforms increase employability in this field.

What are some common challenges faced by Secret Cleared DevSecOps Engineers when integrating security into CI/CD pipelines?

Secret Cleared DevSecOps Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing rapid deployment with stringent security controls, ensuring compliance with government regulations, and managing sensitive data securely within automated pipelines. They must collaborate closely with development, operations, and security teams to identify vulnerabilities early and automate security testing without slowing down delivery. Additionally, maintaining security documentation and audit trails for classified projects adds another layer of complexity to the role.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Rancher Government Solutions (RGS) is specifically designed to address the unique security and operational needs of the U.S. Government and military as it relates to application modernization, containers, and Kubernetes.

Rancher is a complete open-source software stack for teams adopting containers. It addresses the operations and security challenges of managing multiple Kubernetes clusters at scale, while providing DevOps teams with integrated tools for running containerized workloads.

RGS supports all Rancher products with U.S. based American citizens with the highest security clearances who are currently supporting programs across the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, and civilian agencies.

POSITION SUMMARY
As a DevSecOps Engineer at Rancher Government Solutions, you will be a strategic technical force responsible for delivering expert-level implementation within a team of engineers and architects. Driving mission success focused on the Rancher portfolio of products within the Federal Government. You will work directly with our cleared agency clients (TS//SCI with FSP), providing deep technical engineering support, architectural guidance, and hands-on keyboard engineering activity to ensure their complex container, CI/CD, DevOps, Infrastructure, and Kubernetes initiatives are successful. This role is instrumental in translating customer needs into robust, secure, and scalable production and mission environments.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Leadership & Architecture:

  • Lead the deployment, configuration, and integration of the Rancher product portfolio within complex government cloud and on-premise environments.
  • Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) workflows to streamline application delivery and cluster management.
  • Perform deep-level troubleshooting of Kubernetes clusters, container networking, and security configurations.
  • Collaborate with customer technical teams to ensure Rancher solutions are optimized for their specific mission requirements.
    • Act as a trusted technical advisor to customers, providing guidance on best practices for container orchestration, security hardening, and DevSecOps workflows.
    • Develop proof-of-concepts (PoCs) to demonstrate the value of Rancher and adjacent open-source technologies in solving specific agency challenges.
    • Translate customer requirements into technical tasks and ensure timely delivery of engineering milestones.
    • Leverage deep technical knowledge of virtualization infrastructure and security protocols to deploy, improve, and harden complex infrastructure against rigorous government standards.
    • Develop reusable scripts and templates to build rapid development and test systems, ensuring consistent and repeatable environments for rapid prototyping.
    • Assist in the resolution performance issues; working with developers to troubleshoot application deployment failures to ensure mission readiness
    • Assist in providing guidance to fellow DevSecOps developers and administrators while interfacing effectively with multiple technical disciplines in a team environment.

Knowledge Sharing & Growth:

  • Contribute to the internal RGS engineering knowledge base by documenting unique customer configurations and solutions.
  • Work closely with the Senior DevSecOps team to provide feedback from the field to influence product roadmaps.
  • Help mentor Associate engineers and participate in peer code/architecture reviews.
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or 5+ years of professional or military experience
  • 3–5 years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or Systems Engineering, with a focus on containerized workloads and infrastructure automation within a highly secured environment
  • 1 - 2 years of experience in Kubernetes administration, container runtimes (Docker/containerd), and Linux internals.
  • Requires TS//SCI Clearance w/ Full Scope Polygraph

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong experience with CI/CD tools (GitLab, ArgoCD, or Jenkins) and configuration management/IaC (Terraform, Ansible, or Pulumi).
  • Understanding of DevSecOps principles, including container scanning, STIG compliance, and network policies.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts to customer stakeholders and work effectively in a consultative environment.
