Istio information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Istio position, and why are they important?

To excel in an Istio-focused role, you need a strong foundation in cloud-native technologies, Kubernetes orchestration, and microservices architecture, typically backed by experience in DevOps or site reliability engineering. Familiarity with Istio service mesh, monitoring tools like Prometheus and Grafana, and certifications such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) are valuable. Analytical thinking, troubleshooting ability, and strong collaboration skills help address complex networking and security challenges across teams. Mastery of these areas ensures secure, resilient, and efficient communication between microservices in dynamic production environments.

What is Istio used for?

Istio is an open-source service mesh platform used to manage, secure, and observe microservices in cloud-native applications. It provides features like traffic management, security policies, and telemetry collection, often working alongside container orchestration tools like Kubernetes. Knowledge of networking, security, and container environments is helpful for roles involving Istio.

What is an Istio?

An Istio job typically involves managing and configuring Istio, an open-source service mesh that helps control service-to-service communication in cloud-native applications. Responsibilities may include deploying Istio, configuring traffic routing, ensuring security with mTLS, and monitoring service performance. Professionals in this role often work with Kubernetes, networking, and observability tools to optimize microservices communication.

What does an Istio do?

Professionals working with Istio are typically responsible for deploying, configuring, and maintaining the Istio service mesh in Kubernetes environments. They manage traffic routing, enforce security and authentication policies, enable observability, and troubleshoot inter-service communication issues. Collaboration with development, operations, and security teams is crucial to ensure network resiliency and policy compliance across microservices. Regular tasks also include optimizing service performance, automating deployment processes, and keeping systems up to date with the latest patches and configurations.

Job description

The Opportunity

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Cloud Platform team, you will play a key role in building the core systems and services that power Postman's internal platform. You'll help create new backend services that manage how we deploy, scale, and operate our infrastructure and product services, leveraging Java, Spring Boot, and Hibernate (JPA) on top of cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes, ArgoCD, Istio, and Terraform.

This role is highly impactful: the systems you build will be used across Postman engineering, enabling faster delivery, better scalability, and a stronger developer experience. You'll also have the opportunity to contribute to open source, shaping tools that extend beyond Postman's boundaries.

What You'll Do
  • Design and develop backend services in Java and Spring Boot to support Postman's internal Cloud Platform.
  • Architect new services that manage service deployment, lifecycle, and scaling across Kubernetes clusters.
  • Implement GitOps workflows (ArgoCD) to support continuous delivery.
  • Integrate with cloud-native tooling such as Istio, Helm, and Terraform.
  • Apply strong software engineering practices: testing, code reviews, CI/CD, and documentation.
  • Drive innovation by contributing to open-source projects where applicable.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Cloud Architects, DevOps engineers, and product teams to align solutions with business needs.
  • Ensure performance, reliability, and scalability of services that run at Postman's scale.
About You
  • 5+ years of professional experience in backend software development.
  • Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and Hibernate (JPA).

  • Proven experience designing and maintaining APIs and distributed backend services.

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Argo, Istio, and Terraform.

  • Strong understanding of software design principles (scalability, extensibility, resilience).

  • Experience with build and testing tools (Gradle, Maven, JUnit).

  • Proficiency with Git and Gitflow workflows.

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

  • Strong security mindset and awareness of compliance frameworks.

The reasonably estimated base salary for this role ranges from $210,000 to $240,000, plus a competitive equity package. Actual compensation is based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience.
