Second Chance Remote information

What is a second chance remote?

Second Chance Remote jobs are employment opportunities offered by companies that are open to hiring individuals with criminal records or those seeking a fresh start after past mistakes. These jobs are typically remote, meaning you can work from home or anywhere with internet access. Employers offering second chance opportunities believe in giving people the ability to rebuild their lives, often providing support, training, and flexible positions. Such roles can range from customer service and data entry to IT and creative work. Second chance remote jobs help break down the barriers to employment for those with non-traditional backgrounds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a second chance remote position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a second chance remote position, you generally need a high school diploma or GED, basic computer literacy, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and cloud-based platforms is often required. Strong communication, self-motivation, and reliability help candidates stand out and build trust with employers. These skills are important because they demonstrate your ability to contribute productively and responsibly in a remote work environment, regardless of your background.

What unique challenges might I encounter when working in a second chance remote role, and how can I overcome them?

Second Chance Remote roles often involve supporting individuals with prior barriers to employment, such as past incarceration or significant career gaps. You may encounter challenges such as building trust with clients, navigating complex personal situations, and balancing empathy with accountability. Overcoming these challenges requires strong communication skills, patience, and a commitment to fostering a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Collaboration with social services, employers, and team members is essential to provide comprehensive support and help clients succeed in their roles.

Your Job
DEPCOM Power, a leading Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firm in the renewable energy industry, is seeking a Sr. Civil Engineer to join our growing team. We are looking for civil engineers who are passionate about the challenge of utility-scale renewable energy design. Whether your background is in land development, industrial facilities, transportation, water resources, mining, utilities, or renewable energy, we are interested in engineers who bring strong technical fundamentals, sound judgment, curiosity, and a desire to help solve complex site development and construction challenges.
This position can be physically based out of our facility in Katy, TX (greater Houston, TX area) or Pleasanton, CA (greater San Francisco Bay area).
This position has upside for consideration to be fully remote or a hybrid work schedule.

As a Koch Engineered Solutions company, DEPCOM Power is a leading energy solutions partner for utility solar, battery energy storage, and broader energy industries, providing project development support, engineering, procurement, construction, repowering, and operations and maintenance services.
Why This Role Is Unique
You will help design and construct some of the largest renewable energy projects in North America. This role combines civil engineering, construction, environmental stewardship, and field problem-solving at a scale rarely seen in traditional site development.
What You Will Do
  • Develop civil engineering and site preparation designs for large-scale renewable energy projects.
  • Support construction activities by reviewing field conditions, responding to contractor questions, evaluating design adjustments, and helping resolve site challenges.
  • Apply engineering judgment to develop practical, economical, and constructible solutions while meeting project requirements.
  • Collaborate with project, structural, electrical, environmental, and construction teams.
  • Prepare and review grading plans, drainage studies, erosion and sediment control plans, SWPPP documentation, specifications, and related civil deliverables.
  • Perform site visits to evaluate terrain, drainage patterns, soil conditions, constructability considerations, and overall site development strategy.
  • Lead discussions with project stakeholders and help drive alignment on technical solutions.
  • Address challenges related to grading, drainage, erosion control, soil stabilization, and site constructability.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project cost, quality, schedule, and execution.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Demonstrated capability and legal eligibility to act as the sealing Engineer of Record for civil engineering plans, calculations, specifications, and related design deliverables.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: site development, land development, transportation engineering, industrial facilities, utility infrastructure, water resources, or renewable energy projects.
  • Genuine interest in renewable energy civil design and a desire to apply civil engineering judgment to large-scale site development, construction, drainage, earthwork, and constructability challenges.
  • Experience developing civil engineering designs and supporting construction activities.
  • Understanding of grading, drainage, earthwork, stormwater management, and site development fundamentals.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and coordination skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% for site visits and project support.

What Will Put You Ahead (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Utility-scale solar or battery energy storage projects.
  • Large-scale grading and earthwork design.
  • Hydrology and hydraulic analysis.
  • Stormwater permitting and regulatory coordination.
  • Erosion and sediment control design.
  • Geotechnical engineering and soil stabilization.
  • Construction support, field engineering, or owner's engineering experience.
  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record .
