Job description

The Camp Swim Lesson Manager is a seasonal leadership role responsible for overseeing and supporting swim instruction as part of J Camps. This position leads a team of swim instructors delivering daily swim lessons to campers ages 3-8 and plays a key role in ensuring high-quality instruction, safety, skill progression, and a positive experience for campers, staff, and families.
This role is hands-on and mentorship-focused, supporting instructors in the water, modeling best practices, and helping newer staff build confidence and teaching skills. The Camp Swim Lesson Manager works closely with the Director of Aquatics and camp leadership to ensure a safe, organized, and developmentally appropriate aquatics program.
Schedule:
  • Pre-Camp Season: May 1-May 30 (As needed preparation time)
  • Camp Season: June 1-August 7 (June 1-5 training week)
  • Position Break: June 29-July 3
  • Camp Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:45 AM-3:00 PM (some days longer)

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Staff Support
  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of 7-10 camp swim instructors
  • Serve as a positive role model for teaching techniques, camper engagement, and pool safety
  • Support newer and developing instructors by providing coaching, feedback, and in-the-moment assistance
  • Foster a collaborative, encouraging, and professional team environment

Hiring, Training & Scheduling
  • Assist the Director of Aquatics with interviewing, hiring, and onboarding summer camp swim instructors
  • Support and help facilitate pre-camp and ongoing instructor training
  • Create and manage swim instructor schedules and assist with coverage as needed
  • Assist in leading pre-summer swim instructor training and ongoing bi-weekly swim instructor in-service trainings, or additional trainings as needed

Program & Lesson Coordination
  • Organize weekly swim lesson schedules for campers
  • Assist with grouping campers by swim skill level
  • Get into the water regularly to support instructors during lessons
  • Teach swim lessons as needed to support staffing or lesson quality

Camper Progress & Family Communication
  • Oversee and ensure timely completion of bi-weekly camper swim progress reports by swim instructors, providing guidance
  • Share swim progress updates and feedback with camper parents in a professional and supportive manner
  • Assist the Director of Aquatics with pre-summer parent meet-and-greet events

Safety & Collaboration
  • Support aquatics safety training for day camp counselors
  • Ensure aquatics programming follows established safety standards and procedures
  • Communicate proactively with aquatics and camp leadership regarding staffing, lesson quality, or safety needs

  • Prior experience teaching swim lessons, preferably to young children (ages 3-8)
  • Previous leadership, mentoring, or supervisory experience in an aquatics or camp setting preferred
  • Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to coach and support staff with varying experience levels
  • Comfortable working in the water for extended periods

Certifications
  • Current Lifeguard Certification, CPR/AED, and First Aid (or ability to obtain prior to start date)

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in and around a pool environment
  • Ability to lift, support, and assist young children in the water
  • Ability to stand, walk, and be physically active for extended periods
