Job Overview:

Opens and closes the racetrack to horse training at designated hours; Catches horses that get free during workouts; Contacts appropriate personnel when injuries occur; Enforces training and equipment regulations on the track.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols the racetrack during training and racing hours to look for debris and foreign objects;
  • Opens and closes the racetrack to horse training at designated hours;
  • Catches horses that get free during workouts;
  • Contacts appropriate personnel when injuries occur;
  • Enforces training and equipment regulations on the track;
  • Leads horses in the post parade on to the racetrack;
  • Ensures that mounts are properly maintained;
  • Rides horses who are having a difficult time training properly;
  • Monitors skill-sets of exercise riders;
  • Reports to Stewards infractions by exercise riders breaking/not adhering to rules.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Level Required: Grammar school
  • Minimum Years and Kind of Work Experience Required: 3 years of work experience as an exercise rider and handling horses.

Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

This position requires a high level of physical stamina and comfort working in an active racetrack environment. The Seasonal BEL Outrider must be able to perform prolonged periods of riding, walking, and standing while outdoors in varying weather conditions. Duties involve mounting, riding, and handling horses during training and racing hours, responding quickly to unpredictable situations, and safely managing horses that become loose or difficult to control.

The work environment includes regular exposure to live racehorses, equipment, uneven surfaces, dust, and noise typical of a racetrack setting. The role requires sustained focus, situational awareness, and the physical strength and coordination necessary to safely perform horsemanship duties. Work is performed entirely on-site and may include early mornings, extended hours, weekends, and holidays based on racing and training schedules.

Pay Range / Salary:  $23.25 per hour
