Seasonal Machine Operator information

What is a seasonal machine operator?

Seasonal Machine Operators are workers who operate machinery in industries such as agriculture, food processing, or manufacturing during peak seasons when extra help is needed. Their duties often include setting up, running, and maintaining machines, monitoring production lines, and ensuring products meet quality standards. These positions are typically temporary and last only for the duration of the busy season, making them ideal for individuals seeking short-term employment. Training is usually provided on the job, and safety procedures are an important part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal machine operator?

To thrive as a Seasonal Machine Operator, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, a solid understanding of machinery operation, and basic mechanical aptitude. Familiarity with specific equipment such as forklifts, conveyor systems, or packaging machines, and sometimes OSHA safety certification, is highly valued. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong teamwork skills help operators adapt to varying workloads and environments. These abilities ensure safe, efficient machine operation and support smooth seasonal production peaks.

What are some common challenges faced by seasonal machine operators, and how can they be managed?

Seasonal Machine Operators often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new equipment and processes, as they may be brought on during peak production periods when training time is limited. Additionally, they may work longer hours or rotating shifts to meet seasonal demand. To manage these challenges, it's important to communicate proactively with supervisors, seek clarification on machine procedures, and follow all safety protocols. Developing strong teamwork skills also helps, as operators frequently collaborate with other production staff to ensure smooth workflow and efficiency.

Job Title: Saw OperatorJob Description

The Saw Operator works on 2nd shift (2:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m.) or 3rd shift (10:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m.) in a metals service center, cutting aviation- and marine-grade metals to precise customer specifications. This role operates band saws and metal saws, uses forklifts and overhead equipment to move material, and ensures all orders are processed accurately, safely, and on time in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities
  • Operate one or more plate and bar saws with expert mechanical proficiency to cut material to exact customer specifications.
  • Process orders according to cut-to-size requirements, ensuring all orders are completed accurately and on time without exception.
  • Pull, stage, and prepare metal stock at the saw for processing.
  • Retrieve material from plate racks using a fork truck and move materials safely throughout the service center.
  • Measure material using tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, calipers, and other precision tools to verify exact dimensions.
  • Record and enter detailed cut specifications on the appropriate forms for accurate data entry into the computer system.
  • Safely and properly operate cranes and fork trucks, applying safe rigging practices at all times.
  • Assist with packaging outbound shipments, receiving incoming materials, and participating in weekly inventory cycle counts.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe immediate work area throughout the shift.
  • Follow all safety rules, regulations, and quality standards established by the facility.
  • Adhere to all handbook policies and procedures, including operational, safety, and conduct guidelines.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while accepting direction and collaborating with team members as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with co-workers, customers, and suppliers to support smooth operations.
  • Apply strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills to meet production and delivery deadlines.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of saw operation experience in aviation or a similar field.
  • Minimum of 1+ years of manufacturing or warehouse material handling and forklift experience.
  • Two or more years of related experience or training working with saws and/or production machinery.
  • One or more years of experience in the metals service center industry.
  • Ability to operate band saws and metal saws, including Metlsaw or similar machinery.
  • Proficiency in reading tape measures and using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and nibblers.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and calculate numbers and data accurately, including basic math used in measurements and cutting.
  • Good written and oral communication skills for documenting specifications and coordinating with team members.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while accepting direction when required.
  • Ability to maintain high integrity and positive working relationships with co-workers, customers, and suppliers.
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation to meet production goals and quality standards.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally, and to push/pull 25-50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to stand for most of the shift and perform frequent bending, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting, balancing, and reaching.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • One or more years of experience in the metals service center industry is preferred beyond the minimum requirements.
  • Experience operating any type of production or manufacturing machinery for 6+ months is considered a strong plus.
  • Comfort working in a warehouse environment that is not climate controlled but uses seasonal heating and ventilation.
  • Attention to detail when handling aviation-grade (2,000 and 7,000 series) and marine-grade (5,000 series) metals.
  • Ability to use close vision (clear vision at 36 inches or less) for precision measurements and machine operation.
  • Commitment to following established safety practices and quality procedures.
  • Reliability in adhering to shift schedules and production timelines.
Why Work Here?

You join a smaller, close-knit local operation where approximately 35 colleagues work together in a collaborative, supportive environment. The warehouse is designed to be comfortable, with heaters in the winter and open doors with large fans in the summer to keep air circulating. You benefit from clear processes, stable shift schedules, and the opportunity to build specialized skills in aviation- and marine-grade metals, saw operation, and material handling. The culture emphasizes safety, integrity, and strong work ethic, offering a setting where your contribution is visible and valued, and where you can grow your technical expertise in a hands-on industrial environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a metals service center warehouse that is not fully climate controlled but is maintained as a comfortable environment. In colder months, heaters provide warmth, and in warmer months, large doors are opened and industrial fans circulate air throughout the facility. The work involves standing for most of the shift, frequent use of hands and fingers to handle materials and tools, and regular bending, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting, balancing, and reaching. You frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, and you push or pull between 25 and 50 pounds throughout the day. The environment includes band saws, metal saws (including Metlsaw or similar equipment), forklifts, cranes, and precision measuring tools such as tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, and calipers. Work is performed on 2nd shift (2:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m.) or 3rd shift (10:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m.), following established safety rules, quality standards, and operational procedures.
