Job description

Seasonal Equipment Operator / Snowplow Driver

The Seasonal Equipment Operator / Snowplow Driver assists the Department of Public Works with snow and ice removal and other duties as assigned during the winter months approximately mid-November through mid-April on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm (flexible) and/or as needed (a typical season may require approximately 2-20+hours/week in addition to the weekend hours). Required days of work can include weekdays, weekends, and holidays. The employee is paid only for actual hours worked. Employees will receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.

Salary range starting at $24.5799 - $29.5241 hourly (DOQ)

Schedule: Mid-November through Mid-April - Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm (flexible) and/or as needed

Essential Job Functions

The job functions listed herein are neither exclusive nor exhaustive, but are intended to be illustrative of the types of tasks the employee will most likely be expected to perform on a regular basis. The employee may be asked to perform different or additional tasks than the ones listed here, as the needs of the employer and/or the requirements of the position change.

Knowledge of

  • Employees shall be proficient in winter maintenance: ability to plow with a single/tandem axle plow truck with front and wing mounted plows while operating a spreader and dump body for salt application along with chloride applicator. Respond to snow and ice events within 1 hour of the call-out.
  • Be able to use a front-end loader to properly load a dump truck.
  • Routine servicing and light maintenance of equipment.
  • General vehicle maintenance knowledge.
  • Complete snow related activities including clearing cross walks, building walkways and other locations around the city.
  • Required to work weekend or evening hours as directed.
  • Understanding and carrying out verbal and written instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Candidate must be a team player and able to undertake assigned tasks in a respectful, safe, efficient manner.
  • This position requires all duties to be performed in conformance with City of Waukesha policies and adherence to state and federal safety policies and standards.

Physical Demands

  • Job consists of a combination of sitting, standing, walking, and driving
  • Employees will be exposed to cold, wet, and slippery conditions.
  • There will be exposure to dust, noise, and chemicals.
  • Frequently subject to work outside of a normal work hour/week schedule as weather or circumstances dictate, e.g. snowstorms, rain/wind storms, or other events requiring response to protect the public as a result of natural or man-made circumstances.
  • Employees will need to be available to report for work within 1-hour of call-in. Operations may extend to a 16 hour shift.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age upon employment
  • Valid commercial driver's license (Minimum: Class B)
  • Experience with the operations of various construction related equipment for winter street maintenance
  • Must be able to pass background check, drug test, reference check, and driving test.
  • Minimum one year of snow removal experience with a with a single/tandem axle plow truck.
