Position Title: Ski Patrol Hill Captain

Reports To: Ski Patrol Director

Employment Status: Winter Seasonal

Brundage Mountain Patrol provides professional emergency medical services, mountain rescue, hazard mitigation, and risk management in support of winter mountain operations. Patrollers play a vital role in maintaining the safety of guests, employees, and resort infrastructure while delivering exceptional guest service.

As a Hill Captain, you are a member of the patrol leadership team, assisting the Patrol Director in supervising daily operations and leading professional emergency response and rescue activities. In addition to Line Patroller responsibilities, Hill Captains provide leadership during medical incidents, mountain rescues, lift evacuations, search operations, avalanche mitigation, and other emergency events while supporting the development and success of the patrol team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Coordinate and supervise patrollers in all aspects of daily operations, including task assignments, special events, and avalanche mitigation activities.
• Provide professional, courteous emergency medical care, mountain rescue, guest service, and mountain safety support. Assist patrollers with complex guest interactions when supervisory support is needed.
• Understand and enforce Idaho Ski Area Liability statutes, the "Your Responsibility Code," Brundage Mountain Resort policies and procedures, and applicable insurance requirements.
• Maintain expert knowledge of patrol policies, procedures, and operational standards. Mentor, instruct, and ensure patrollers consistently adhere to established procedures.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and revision of patrol protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Assign, coordinate, and oversee daily work assignments and special projects.
• Prepare and lead daily operational briefings, debriefings, and other patrol meetings.
• In coordination with the Patrol Director and Assistant Patrol Director, develop, organize, and deliver preseason, new patroller, EMT, and ongoing on-hill training programs.
• Lead annual proficiency evaluations and verify patroller competency in medical skills, toboggan handling and other task books to ensure compliance with Brundage Mountain Patrol standards.
• Develop and deliver training opportunities for other resort departments as needed.
• Lead or supervise emergency response operations, including lift evacuations, search operations, avalanche mitigation, technical rescues, and mass casualty incidents.
• Conduct on-hill incident investigations and complete associated reports and documentation.
• Supervise the inspection and maintenance of trail signage, safety padding, closures, and other hazard mitigation measures.
• Ensure timely and accurate completion of patrol logs, incident reports, checklists, and other required documentation. Perform routine quality assurance reviews of patrol documentation.
• Participate in annual performance evaluations for patrol staff.
• Perform all additional responsibilities outlined in the Line Patroller job description.

Job Qualifications:

• EMT license, and/or Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certified.
• EMT's must become licensed in Idaho upon employment
• BLS CPR for the professional rescuer
• Must be an expert level skier/snowboarder, capable of skiing all types of terrain under all weather conditions
• Must be able to work in inclement weather in a high alpine environment
• Ability to reason and deal with emergency situations performing under high stress
• Must use manual dexterity to operate equipment
• Must be able to lift, maneuver, carry at least 50 pounds
• Must have sight, speech, and hearing abilities sufficient to learn skills, follow and provide directions. Ability to hear & communicate over a two-way radio
• Must possess basic computer skills/knowledge
• Must have excellent guest service and interpersonal skills
• Must work well on a team
• Effective and efficient organizational skills – time management, prioritization, etc.
• Positive and supportive leadership skills.
• Proficiency with computer use, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Iphone, etc.
• Completion of avalanche course – Recreational Level 1 (minimum)
• Basic understanding of snow physics
• Trained for and able to train in specialized rescues, such as ascenders, high angle, low angle, difficult extrications and transports.
• At least 4 years of patrol experience, with a minimum of 2 years in a leadership or supervisory position.

Other Requirements:

• Provide supervision and training to all Patrollers and motivate them to achieve the next professional level in their Patrol status (Level 1-Level 3).
• Notify Patrol Director or Assistant Patrol Director of any performance, behavior, or insubordination issues. Possess the ability to address and document individual and team successes and opportunities. Desire to coach individuals through opportunities and develop remediation plans for follow through.
• Must be at least 21 years of age upon employment.
• Must pass a criminal history and background check
• Must have a valid Driver's License and pass an insurance driving history inquiry.
