Job description

About Dexterity
Dexterity is the enterprise Physical AI company building intelligent robots for complex industrial work.
Dexterity's Mech systems combine Foresight world model, robotics, and Physical AI platform to perform demanding logistics workflows, including trailer loading, trailer unloading, airport baggage handling, etc. at the speed, reliability, and safety levels required for high-volume operations. Dexterity's Foresight World Model powers real-time perception, planning, and execution across physical environments with the interpretability required for industrial deployment. Dexterity is headquartered in Redwood City, California.
Dexterity is backed by world-class investors such as Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Obvious Ventures. We are a diverse and multidisciplinary team with a culture built on passion, trust, and dedication.
About the Role
As a Field Service Engineer, your primary mission is keeping Dexterity's robotic systems running at peak performance in live customer warehouse environments. This role is focused on hands-on field servicing, preventive maintenance, physical retrofits, and rapid hardware/software troubleshooting.
You will be the primary technical point of contact on the shop floor during deployments and service calls, ensuring physical AI systems remain reliable, operational, and capable of hitting customer performance goals.
Key Responsibilities
  • On-Site Servicing & Maintenance: Execute hands-on field repairs, preventive maintenance, component replacements, and system upgrades on production robotic systems.
  • Field Hardware Diagnostics: Perform root-cause analysis (RCA) on failing physical hardware, mechanical assemblies, pneumatics, sensors, and electrical control circuits using multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Software & Systems Triage: Use Linux/UNIX command line interfaces (CLI), networking diagnostics, and trace/debug logs directly on customer sites to diagnose and resolve operational anomalies.
  • System Commissioning & Deployment: Lead hardware installation, software commissioning with specialized tooling, testing, and calibration during new system rollouts.
  • Spares & Component Refurbishment: Assist in RCAs on failed production components, log ticket updates, manage spare parts inventories, and refurbish components following repair protocols.
  • Field Escalation & SLAs: Execute escalation playbooks to resolve critical outages rapidly, supporting internal and offshore operations teams to hit Dexterity SLAs.
  • Customer Facing & Enablement: Act as the technical face of Dexterity on site, training customer personnel, operators, and external partners on proper handling, basic troubleshooting, and maintenance protocols.
  • Engineering Feedback Loop: Deliver clear field documentation, ticket logs, and actionable issue trends back to HQ engineering to improve future product serviceability and design.

Qualifications & Mindset
  • Education & Experience: BS or AAS in an engineering discipline related to robotics (CS, EE, ME, Mechatronics, etc.) or equivalent practical field service experience.
If you don't have a degree, but have the confidence and hands-on skill to service complex machinery, please apply-curiosity, tenacity, and perseverance trump degrees in this role.
  • Field & Hardware Expertise: Proven experience performing mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic repairs on automated or industrial control systems using hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment.
  • Software & OS Diagnostics: Comfort navigating Linux/UNIX command line (CLI), analyzing system logs, and basic networking troubleshooting.
  • Action-Oriented Mindset: Strong sense of urgency in high-stakes production environments, with a "whatever it takes" attitude to restore system uptime safely.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Ability to communicate technical issues clearly to both non-technical site operators and HQ engineering teams.

Desired Skills (Nice-to-Have)
  • Hands-on experience servicing warehouse automation, industrial robotics, or material handling equipment.
  • Basic software scripting or troubleshooting experience (Python, Linux, GitHub).
  • Knowledge of network engineering, IT infrastructure, or industrial communications.
  • Ability to read and navigate 3D CAD models/drawings (Solidworks, NX).
  • Experience using ticketing and field service management tools (Jira, Zendesk, Google Suite).

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Field Environment: Active warehouse and industrial logistics settings, including seasonal temperature variations and industrial background noise.
  • Physical Demands: Prolonged walking and standing on warehouse floors, working in and around physical machinery, lifting components, and using hand/electrical tools.
  • Travel & Schedule: Up to 50% travel to customer sites. Willingness to work extended hours or modified shifts during go-lives, emergency repairs, and planned maintenance windows.

Compensation
Base pay is one component of Dexterity's total rewards package, which may also include equity, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits, and other compensation elements depending on eligibility.
The annual base salary range for this position is $80,000-$110,000 USD.
Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, skills, and overall qualifications. Final compensation will be determined on a case-by-case basis and will also consider relevant experience and internal equity.
Equal Opportunity Employer
Dexterity is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all employees and applicants are treated with fairness and respect.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, religious creed, ancestry, national origin, citizenship, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and related medical conditions), gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, marital status, medical condition, genetic information, physical or mental disability, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
