Summary:Acts in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) to patients in the interfacility transport setting. The Paramedic will maintain clinical competence for patients across the age continuum and work in unison with a variety of care practitioners, including, but not limited to: Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Nurses, Physicians and a variety of outside hospital staff, to provide exceptional care. The Paramedic demonstrates the skill necessary to provide care to their patients based on the needs of their patient(s). The Paramedic I complies with all rules and standards of the PennSTAR Flight Team and provides care within the appropriate scope of practice. The Paramedic shall complete all required continuing education to maintain compliance with the standards set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Upon completion of orientation, the Paramedic I must be capable of obtaining and maintaining unrestricted Medical Command, granted by the PennSTAR Flight Medical Director. Promotion to Paramedic II is contingent after one (1) year of certification as a Pennsylvania State Paramedic and achievement of an approved critical care certification. Acceptable certifications include: Critical Care Certified Paramedic (CCP-C) or Flight Paramedic Certification (FP-C).
Responsibilities:- Perform a thorough check of the ambulance, work space and supplies at the beginning of each shift and correct any deficiencies found. Complete Narcotic Accountability Form at start of shift. Assist EMT partner with completion of daily unit inspection. Maintain communication with PennSTAR Communications Center as to the status of the ambulance, including, but not limited to: maintenance/mechanical issues and phase of transport. Provide Patient Report as needed. Assist EMS Partner with Ambulance navigation system. Maintain familiarity with ambulance operations including but not limited to: vehicle security features, operation of emergency lighting, operation of siren, operation of mobile and portable radio, installation and operation of on-board oxygen system, operation of on-board suction unit, operation of on-board fire extinguishers, operation of stretcher and loading system (if applicable), and operation of UV decontamination system (if applicable). Report to work on-time in provided, appropriate dress, including but not limited to: Flight Suit, Seasonal Outerwear, and Black Duty Boots (not provided). Maintain professional License/Certification/CEU's and all required education to maintain Unrestricted Medical Command status within the host EMS Region of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Upload required documents into EMS Manager program in appropriate location, and maintain credentialing profile without evidence of expiration. Promptly respond to requested communication by phone or email in an effort to maintain efficient operation within the department. Timely completion of UPHS required education, through Knowledge Link platform. Maintain yearly compliance with required vaccinations, including but not limited to: PPD, Flu Vaccine, COVID-19 Vaccine. Assist Program in the provision of continuing education programs. Participate in Committees as needed. Attend 80% of staff meetings and 100% of required training. Promote the organizational values of patient, visitor, and customer satisfaction by demonstrating courtesy, respect, and professionalism towards patients, families, visitors, co-workers and members of the public safety entity. Complete an orientation program established by the PennSTAR Flight Team. Coordinate and supervise the safe and proper loading and offloading of patients from the ambulance. Participate in debrief as needed with multidisciplinary teams. Lecture Physicians, Nurses, EMS Staff and all other allied health professionals during continuing education programs. Participate in departmental task activities as requested. Meet with specialty groups to provide information and training regarding the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Division of Trauma, or PennSTAR Flight. Integrate care with that provided by other health care professionals. Transfer of patients to receiving unit, providing detailed report on patient findings, changes noted and care rendered. Must have working knowledge of medical equipment the crewmember may potentially be exposed to in the daily function of the job, including but not limited to: Endotracheal, Adjunct, Percutaneous/Surgical Airway Insertion and Management. Vascular Access: IV/IO/Central. Transport Ventilator Management: Hamilton T-1 and EMV+ IV Infusion Pumps: Sapphire Zoll Cardiac Monitor and Defibrillator. Patient/Customer Accountabilities: Crewmember will maintain a polite, professional, demeanor when dealing with patients, coworkers, public safety agency and hospital staff. Complete required documentation prior to the end of shift, including but not limited to: Consent Form, Certificate of Medical Necessity, PA Transfer of Care Form, and Electronic Patient Report. Age Specific Accountabilities: All Ages Utilize appropriate equipment for size and weight. Provide an appropriate primary assessment and intervene as necessary. Recognize and document age – related data in documentation. Use appropriate references for tailoring medication administration and/or clinical assessment of the patient. Infant and Child Crewmember will not leave infant/child unattended. Ensure infant/child is properly secured in an approved restraint device. Ensure all small objects are outside infants/child's grasp. Obtain parental consent as needed Adolescent Recognize risk of drug, alcohol and cigarette use. Geriatric Recognize normal signs of aging especially visual and hearing changes. Use full name of individual when speaking to him/her.
