How much do seasonal fixed wing pilot jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for seasonal fixed wing pilot in the United States is $121,800.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $110,500.00 and $135,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilots?

Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilots are licensed aviators who operate fixed-wing aircraft, such as airplanes, on a temporary or seasonal basis. They are often employed for specific periods when demand is high, such as during wildfire season, agricultural spraying, or aerial surveying. These pilots may work in remote locations and must adapt to changing schedules and challenging flying conditions. The role typically requires a commercial pilot's license and specialized training depending on the season's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilot, you need a commercial pilot’s license, thorough knowledge of flight regulations, and experience in operating fixed wing aircraft, often in challenging environments. Familiarity with avionics systems, GPS navigation, and weather tracking tools is typically required, along with certifications such as an Instrument Rating. Strong decision-making, situational awareness, and effective communication are vital soft skills, especially when flying in dynamic or remote conditions. These competencies are crucial for ensuring flight safety, efficiency, and successful mission completion during demanding seasonal operations.

What is the difference between Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilot vs Agricultural Pilot?

AspectSeasonal Fixed Wing PilotAgricultural Pilot
CertificationsCommercial Pilot License, specific to fixed-wing aircraftCommercial Pilot License, often with agricultural or crop-dusting endorsements
Work EnvironmentAirports, seasonal flight operations, various locationsFarms, rural areas, crop-dusting sites
Industry UsageTourism, cargo, seasonal transportationAgriculture, crop spraying, pest control

Both roles require a Commercial Pilot License and involve flying fixed-wing aircraft. However, Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilots typically operate in seasonal transportation or tourism settings, while Agricultural Pilots focus on crop-dusting and agricultural services in rural areas. The choice depends on your industry interest and preferred work environment.

What are the typical responsibilities and team dynamics for a Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilot during peak operational periods?

As a Seasonal Fixed Wing Pilot, your primary responsibilities often include conducting aerial surveys, transporting personnel or cargo, and supporting activities like wildfire suppression or agricultural applications, depending on your employer. During peak seasons, you’ll work closely with ground crews, dispatchers, and sometimes emergency response teams to ensure flights are executed safely and efficiently. The work environment is fast-paced and can involve irregular hours or rapid deployment based on operational needs. Team communication and adaptability are crucial, as you may need to adjust schedules or routes quickly in response to weather or mission changes.
