Position Summary:

The Fiber Optic Splicing Inspector plays a vital role in ensuring quality and timely deliveries of our fiber services along with additional services to customers, while delivering exceptional internal and external customer service. This position will guide contracted splicing teams towards achieving Sonic's splicing standards.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

The Fiber Optic Splicing Inspector is a full-time (40 hours per week), non-exempt/hourly position. Typical schedule is Monday through Friday 6am-3pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel:
Travel is typical for this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Fiber Optic Splicing Inspector has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The functions listed below are a portion of what is required for this position. The job functions will change along with location and may expand at any time. Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor on construction projects; perform manual work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NESC and NEC, etc.)
  • Inspect splicing work and ensure it meets Sonic standards.
  • Ability to fusion splice SM or MM fiber optic cable: to include terminate various types of fiber optic connectors
  • Work with engineers and OSP management to perform fusion splicing as directed
  • Installation and testing of pressurized and non-pressurized closures on all types and sizes of cable
  • Installation and dressing of fiber optic cable both aerial and underground.
  • Ability to complete fiber cable repairs.
  • Provide management with detailed reports of field splicing activity
  • Communicate with Project Manager and Splicing Manager on project status to meet organizational goals
  • Ensure as-built fiber documentation is correct.
  • Work with management to assign work to field crews
  • Perform site inspections and coordinate post-construction audits
  • All other duties as assigned by the Splicing Manager

Job Requirements:

  • Proficient with fiber equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers and scope
  • Adhere to Local, Federal regulations and Company policies
  • Adhere to Sonic's fiber splicing and testing standards, light levels and Fiber Enclosure build and re-entry procedure for dark and active plant.
  • Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approx. 28 ft high and 75 pounds)
  • Ability to climb poles using ladders and climbing belt as needed
  • Ability to drive company vehicles (bucket truck) in a safe and responsible manner and operate hydraulic aerial lifts
  • Ability to perform job from high places (i.e. poles and roofs)
  • Experience with fiber optic network documentation
  • Strong analytical skills - ability to translate data to strategy
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically
  • Strong communication skills are essential as is a cooperative attitude toward co-workers, customers and contractors
  • Maintain a positive and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with other team members.
  • Must be able to work independently without supervision
  • Valid driver's license, auto insurance, with a satisfactory driving record

 

Work Environment:

Work is normally performed in outdoor settings. Outdoor work may be required in residential and commercial areas, construction sites, and field facilities. Performance of the position requires working safely and may require working outdoors in all weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces.
