The ideal candidate is reliable, hardworking, and adaptable, demonstrating a strong work ethic and attention to detail. They should have experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, and operating maintenance machinery, along with the ability to quickly grasp City park maintenance standards, procedures, and safety protocols. This role involves providing daily leadership and guidance to a team of about six to seven seasonal workers, while promoting a positive, team-focused environment. The candidate will be responsible for the upkeep of all City parks, including grounds, shelters, restrooms, trash management, snow removal, and addressing vandalism and other operational duties to ensure these areas remain safe, attractive, and accessible for visitors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform turf maintenance by watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, aerating, renovating, and fertilizing.
  • Carry out comprehensive shrub and flower bed upkeep, including planting, watering, fertilizing, and health monitoring of landscaped areas.
  • Manage weed control and trim or prune bushes, trees, and shrubs to keep sidewalks, signs, and lights clear.
  • Rake leaves and remove debris from walks, fields, and other areas as well as collect trash.
  • Perform various tasks involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of the irrigation system; modify and adjust sprinkler heads; and oversee controller maintenance.
  • Operate a full range of grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment, such as dump trucks, mowers, hedgers, blowers, tractors, loaders, and hand and power tools.
  • Install, repair, and service play equipment, picnic tables, and park facilities.
  • Clean and prepare restrooms and shelter facilities for public use, and ensure the information boards are current.
  • Aid in pest management by measuring, mixing, and applying chemicals to trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers to combat weeds, insects, and plant diseases.
  • Assist in removing fallen trees, stumps, fallen limbs, snow, and related debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.
  • Identify safety hazards and maintenance needs, then report them to the appropriate staff.
  • Interact politely and tactfully with the public when handling inquiries and complaints, while offering information about the parks' rules and regulations and other facilities.

Qualifications and Requirements:
A combination of the following experience and training would be qualifying.
  • Experience in maintaining, constructing, and repairing landscaped areas.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license.
Working Conditions:
  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to noise, outdoors, confined workspaces, chemicals, dust, mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Willing to work shifts and be on-call.
