A leading national law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent or Patent Attorney to join its growing Intellectual Property practice. The successful candidate will work with innovative biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical organizations, diagnostics developers, and research institutions protecting breakthrough technologies across molecular biology, molecular diagnostics, and other cutting-edge life sciences platforms.

This position offers sophisticated patent prosecution work, direct client interaction, strategic portfolio counseling, and the opportunity to work alongside nationally recognized life sciences intellectual property practitioners.

Role & Responsibilities
  • Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications.
  • Develop and manage strategic patent portfolios for biotechnology and life sciences clients.
  • Advise clients on patent strategy, portfolio development, and intellectual property protection.
  • Collaborate directly with inventors, scientists, and in-house intellectual property teams.
  • Conduct patentability assessments and support freedom-to-operate, validity, and related intellectual property analyses.
  • Utilize patent research resources to support prosecution and portfolio management.
  • Work closely with attorneys and technical professionals on sophisticated domestic and international patent matters.

Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of patent preparation and prosecution experience in biotechnology within a law firm environment.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology, or another closely related life sciences discipline strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree and substantial post-graduate laboratory or biotechnology industry experience will also be considered.
  • Registration before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is required.
  • Experience managing sophisticated biotechnology patent portfolios.
  • Strong familiarity with patent research resources and intellectual property portfolio strategy.
  • Excellent scientific, analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Expected compensation: Approximately $200,000–$240,000, depending on experience, technical background, education, and overall qualifications.
