Job description


Overview:

The Durham Bulls Grounds Crew plays a vital role in ensuring both the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP) and the Durham Athletic Park (DAP) are maintained to professional standards. This team member focused position supports all field operations and contributes to creating a safe, clean, and professional playing environment for players and coaches. Candidates must be reliable, collaborative, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Set up and break down batting practice equipment
  • Prepare game fields, including dragging, watering, and maintaining the infield before and during games
  • Sweep and water pitcher’s mounds and home plate areas; clean and wash bases
  • Assist with placing, covering, and removing the field tarp as weather conditions require
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of workspaces, equipment, and tools
  • Perform in-game field maintenance and complete quick repairs or adjustments as needed
  • Support additional field maintenance projects as directed
  • Work cooperatively with fellow grounds crew members and other Durham Bulls team members

Required Qualifications:

  • Team-oriented, dependable, and eager to contribute to a positive work environment
  • Ability to take instruction, ask questions when needed, and follow established procedures
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with teammates, supervisors, and guests
  • Comfortable working independently and staying focused on tasks without direct supervision
  • Physically able to perform hands-on, outdoor work in varying weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior grounds crew experience preferred

Physical Demands:

  • This role is physically demanding and performed outdoors in all weather conditions. It requires constant standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and lifting throughout extended shifts (often exceeding 8 hours on game days).
  • Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and balance for detailed field preparation
  • Requires significant physical stamina and strength for tasks

Work Conditions:

  • This position works almost exclusively outdoors on the baseball field and in stadium service areas. You will be exposed to all seasonal weather conditions, including intense sun, heat, humidity, rain, and cold.
  • Hours are non-traditional and heavily dictated by the game schedule, practice times, and weather events. This requires early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, and flexibility for unscheduled work
  • The role involves exposure to typical outdoor elements, dust, clay, chalk, fertilizers, and cleaning agents. The work environment can be noisy during games and events.
  • Must adhere to all safety protocols when operating equipment, handling materials, and working as part of a crew on an active field.
