Seasonal Assistant information

What is a seasonal assistant?

Seasonal Assistants are temporary employees hired to support organizations during peak periods of activity, such as holidays, summer months, or specific events. Their responsibilities can vary widely depending on the industry, but typically include tasks like customer service, stocking, administrative support, or event assistance. These roles are ideal for people seeking short-term work, students on break, or those looking to gain experience in a particular field. Seasonal Assistants play a crucial role in helping businesses manage increased workloads and maintain smooth operations during busy times.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges of a seasonal assistant during peak periods?

Seasonal Assistants are often tasked with supporting core staff during high-demand periods, which can include duties like restocking inventory, managing customer inquiries, and assisting with special events or promotions. One of the main challenges is adapting quickly to fast-paced workflows and learning new procedures with limited training time. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, inventory software, or basic office equipment is commonly expected. Standout soft skills include flexibility, teamwork, and excellent customer service. These skills are crucial for efficiently supporting operations during peak periods and ensuring a positive customer experience in a fast-paced environment.

Job description

Be part of an amazing story
Macy's is more than just a store. We're a story. One that's captured the hearts and minds of America for more than 160 years. A story about innovations and traditions...about inspiring stores and irresistible products...about the excitement of the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, and the wonder of the Thanksgiving Day Parade. We've been part of memorable moments and milestones for countless customers and colleagues. Those stories are part of what makes this such a special place to work.
Job Overview
As a Seasonal Champion, you play a key role in creating a welcoming, energized, and customer-focused environment during our busiest time of year. You'll lead by example-supporting your peers, driving a culture of service and sales across all channels, and helping maintain a clean, organized, and inspiring store. Whether sharing product knowledge, helping customers find their perfect item, training new colleagues, or stepping in to support store operations, you bring enthusiasm, adaptability, and a genuine passion for hospitality to every shift. Your leadership helps set the tone for the season and ensures customers and colleagues alike feel valued and supported.
How our Seasonal Champions spend their day...
  • Every day starts with a positive example. As a Seasonal Champion, you come in energized and ready to make an impact - wearing your name badge with pride, greeting teammates with warmth, and helping ensure the sales floor is clean, organized, and ready for customers. You help set the pace by reviewing sales goals, learning about new arrivals and top-selling items, and staying up to date on trends and promotions - so you're prepared to support the team and engage customers confidently.
  • On the floor, you lead through action - by welcoming customers and new colleagues with genuine hospitality, making eye contact, and starting friendly, personal conversations that build lasting relationships. You foster a welcoming culture by supporting onboarding efforts for new colleagues and by setting the tone for consistent service from the start.
  • You help maintain a shoppable space by recovering fitting rooms, updating signs and pricing, helping with support functions in the store, and jumping in on merchandise moves-keeping the floor looking great throughout the day.
  • You help the team Finish Strong - by reminding them to share Loyalty benefits, making sure customers leave with everything they need, and ending each interaction with a sincere thank-you, often using the customer's name and adding a personal touch.
  • You know that service starts with each other. You model collaboration, honesty, and care-supporting your peers so the whole team can better serve our customers and communities.
  • And we know that excellence is a journey - we strive to improve every day, take pride in our work, achieve sales goals and learn from each other to deliver individual and store results.

Full-time colleagues are typically scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week, while part-time colleagues are typically scheduled 12-24 hours per week. All schedules contain weekend shifts as part of the requirements. Hours are dependent on business needs and colleague availability. Information regarding hours per week needed for benefit eligibility purposes can be found here.
Who You Are and Skills You Will Need
  • Leadership: Provide Active Supervision by continually circulating the selling floor, directing colleagues and supporting daily priorities to optimize the customer experience and increase sales. Redirecting support as needed.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels and across departments.
  • Detail Orientation: Careful attention to detail in handling daily tasks, examining reports and making sure business goals are met
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with store leadership to identify and address operational challenges.
  • Adaptability: Handle various responsibilities related to the physical operation of the facility, including activities required to open and close the building, as well as involvement in daily back-of-house functions.
  • Flexibility: Available to support the needs of the business including days, evenings, weekends and holidays with regular, dependable attendance and punctuality
  • Communication: Must be able to:
    • Understand and communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, and supervisors
    • Read and understand employment policies and safety rules/procedures in English
    • Be comfortable communicating and collaborating with customers and colleagues

Essential Physical Requirements You Will Perform
  • This position requires talking, lifting, constant moving, standing, and reaching with arms and hands.
  • Standing for at least two consecutive hours, lifting at least 25lbs., stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders, reaching, including above eye level
  • Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment
  • Frequent use of computers and other technology, necessary to perform job functions, including handheld equipment, cash register and ability to process register transactions
