What is a search rater?

Search Raters are individuals who evaluate the quality and relevance of search engine results. They typically work remotely and are tasked with assessing whether search results meet specific guidelines and match user intent. Their feedback helps improve search algorithms, ensuring users get accurate and helpful information when they search online. Search Raters must follow detailed criteria set by the search engine and often review a variety of content, including web pages, images, and videos.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a search rater, and why are they important?

These skills are crucial for accurately assessing search engine results and ensuring the quality and relevance of online information.

What are some common challenges search raters face, and how can they overcome them?

Search Raters often encounter challenges such as interpreting ambiguous queries, staying updated with evolving guidelines, and maintaining consistency across large volumes of ratings. To overcome these, it's important to regularly review training materials, participate in any available refresher courses, and refer to official documentation when in doubt. Engaging with support forums or team discussions can also help clarify uncertainties and improve accuracy while working independently.

How do you become a Search Rater?

Job description

In this role, you will own the paid search program for Payments—and beyond, as other lines of business evolve—setting strategy, driving performance, and elevating operational rigor. Partnering closely with the paid acquisition lead, you’ll lead through influence by aligning cross-functional partners, shaping test-and-learn roadmaps, and ensuring programs deliver measurable business outcomes and sustained growth.

As the Vice President of Paid Search within the Commercial & Investment Bank team, you will work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment that enables you to harness your expertise, creativity, and analytical skills to make a tangible impact on the lines of business you support. You should be comfortable navigating a fast-paced environment and communicating clearly with both marketing and business stakeholders. You’ll partner closely with Analytics, Content, Product Marketing, UX, Demand Generation, and the broader paid media team to drive leads for the business, while ensuring work remains compliant with internal risk and regulatory standards.

Job Responsibilities
  • Own paid search campaign strategy, ensuring performance against acquisition, lead generation, and growth goals.
  • Lead the development and evolution of SEM strategies, translating business priorities into channel plans, testing roadmaps, and measurable outcomes.
  • Analyze campaign performance and proactively identify opportunities to improve efficiency and conversion rates.
  • Partner with Analytics to build executive-ready reporting and performance recaps that translate data into clear insights, recommendations, and decisions.
  • Provide leadership across stakeholders (Marketing, Analytics, Demand Generation, Product Marketing, UX) to align execution with business goals, timelines, and governance requirements.
  • Guide keyword research, audience segmentation, ad copy testing, and landing page recommendations to improve campaign effectiveness and user outcomes.
  • Lead A/B testing to evaluate new tactics, automation opportunities, and emerging search capabilities—driving continuous improvement and scalable best practices.
  • Monitor competitive trends and search behavior to identify whitespace opportunities and inform future strategy.
  • Ensure campaigns are launched accurately and remain compliant with internal risk and regulatory standards; establish strong QA and operational processes.
  • Build strong relationships with internal teams to support innovation and operational excellence.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
  • 7+ years of experience managing paid search/SEM/lead generation campaigns.
  • Familiarity with organic search, SA360, and analytics platforms.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret performance trends and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Excellent relationship skills: highly collaborative, able to build rapport and credibility, and drive desired business outcomes.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into presentations that can be understood by non-technical audiences.
  • Exceptional partnering skills, with the ability to navigate a large organization.
  • Solutions-oriented, with the ability to problem-solve and present data-driven solutions.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to develop and execute action plans based on available information.
  • Experience managing campaigns with meaningful budgets and performance goals.
  • Excellent communication skills, including confidence presenting insights to cross-functional teams and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
  • Experience in financial services and/or highly regulated industries.
  • B2B media experience is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with integrated search strategies, including SEO and landing page optimization.
  • Interest in evolving areas of search, including automation, AI-driven optimization, and audience-first marketing strategies.
