Search Engine Rater information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Search Engine Rater, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Search Engine Rater, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of web search and internet culture, often supported by a high school diploma or higher. Familiarity with online evaluation tools, search engines, and sometimes proprietary rating guidelines is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to follow complex instructions set top performers apart. These abilities ensure that search results are accurately evaluated, improving the quality and relevance of information presented to users.

What are some common challenges faced by Search Engine Raters, and how can they be managed?

Search Engine Raters often encounter the challenge of interpreting complex guidelines and applying them consistently across a wide range of search queries and content. Staying up-to-date with frequent updates to these guidelines requires attention to detail and adaptability. Managing productivity within strict deadlines while avoiding repetitive strain can also be difficult. To succeed, it helps to review guideline updates regularly, take scheduled breaks, and engage with available support forums or training resources to clarify uncertainties.

What are Search Engine Raters?

Search Engine Raters are individuals who evaluate and rate the quality and relevance of search engine results. They help companies like Google and Bing improve their algorithms by providing feedback on how well search results meet user intent. Raters follow detailed guidelines to assess webpages, images, videos, and other content, ensuring search results are useful and accurate. This role typically involves working from home on a flexible schedule and requires attention to detail and strong analytical skills.

What is the difference between Search Engine Rater vs Search Engine Evaluator?

Job description

Do your Best Work in Mooresville
This position is based at our headquarters in Mooresville, North Carolina. Our corporate office is a space where you can collaborate and do your best work. Take a walk, grab a bite (or a cup of coffee), work out or get a check-up – we invest in you so you can find your inspiration.
Your Impact
The primary purpose of this role is to grow Lowe's organic search visibility and digital commerce performance by turning search demand, technical site signals, competitive intelligence, and customer behavior data into prioritized SEO actions. This role is responsible for analysis and recommendations within an assigned business area, identifying opportunities across category, product, content, and site experience surfaces that improve discoverability, qualified traffic, conversion paths, and revenue contribution. This includes supporting SEO work streams end to end, from opportunity sizing and business case development through requirements, execution partnership, launch validation, and performance measurement. Overall, this role helps Lowe's capture more high-intent customer demand from organic search while improving the digital experience and advancing measurable business outcomes.
Work with a Winning Team
On our team, you'll have the chance to shape the future of retail technology while working alongside talented individuals and leaders who share your passion for innovation and excellence. Our CEO is forward-thinking when it comes to tech, and with a technology team led by one of Forbes Top 50 CIOs you can come to work knowing you'll have the tools, tech, and support needed to advance your skills.
Since we've been in business for over 100 years, we've built an excellent track record of growth and success. We also know what it takes to create an inclusive culture that supports you. Here you have the freedom to team up and collaborate, explore your every curiosity, and help us shape the future of retail.
What You Will Do
Translate organic search goals into tactical steps for an assigned digital commerce segment to drive the execution of SEO operational plans.
Conduct keyword research, SERP analysis, customer search demand analysis, and competitive benchmarking to identify organic visibility gaps and growth opportunities.
Analyze organic search performance across category pages, product pages, content experiences, site search experiences, and other digital templates using search, clickstream, merchandising, and business performance data.
Provide insights, competitive intelligence, and data-driven recommendations to improve rankings, impressions, click-through rate, traffic quality, revenue contribution, and customer engagement.
Identify and prioritize technical SEO opportunities related to crawlability, indexation, redirects, canonicals, structured data, internal linking, page templates, rendering, and site performance.
Scope, prioritize, execute, and validate SEO improvements in partnership with product, engineering, user experience, content, merchandising, analytics, and digital commerce teams.
Develop and execute work plans with SEO and cross-functional teams; ensure work is completed on time and escalate risks, blockers, or dependencies that could delay implementation.
Create business cases, measurement plans, and post-launch readouts for SEO initiatives, including expected and actual impact on organic traffic, rankings, share of voice, conversion, and revenue.
Monitor algorithm updates, search behavior shifts, competitor changes, and technical site changes that may affect organic search performance.
Present SEO project strategies, campaign insights, test results, and recommendations to key stakeholders to guide future strategies, tactics, and activities.
Work as a member of a larger team and may help coach and develop less experienced team members on SEO fundamentals, analysis methods, execution standards, and reporting interpretation.
Maintain strong cross-functional partnerships throughout the organization to ensure SEO recommendations are understood, prioritized, and implemented effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in business administration, marketing, digital commerce, data analytics, communications, information systems, or related field or equivalent years of experience in lieu of education requirement, if applicable
5-7 years of experience in SEO, organic search strategy, eCommerce analytics, digital commerce, content optimization, online merchandising, or related digital performance roles
Preferred Skills/Education
*We encourage you to apply even if you do not have all the preferred skills or experience.*
Experience with large-scale retail or enterprise eCommerce websites
Experience identifying technical SEO opportunities related to crawlability, indexation, canonicals, redirects, structured data, internal linking, page templates, rendering, and site performance
