Is it hard to get a job in search engine optimization?

Getting a job in search engine optimization (SEO) can be competitive, but building skills in keyword research, analytics, and familiarity with tools like Google Analytics and SEMrush can improve prospects. Entry-level roles may require some experience or certifications, but many employers value practical knowledge and a strong understanding of digital marketing principles.

Can you get a search engine optimization job with no experience?

Entry-level SEO jobs often do not require prior experience and focus on skills like keyword research, content optimization, and familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics. Gaining certifications or building a portfolio through personal projects can improve chances of securing an SEO position without experience.

How does a search engine optimization (SEO) professional typically collaborate with content creators and web developers?

SEO professionals work closely with content creators to ensure that written materials are optimized for relevant keywords, user intent, and search engine guidelines. They also collaborate with web developers to implement technical improvements, such as site speed enhancements, structured data, and mobile optimization. Regular communication and teamwork are essential, as SEO recommendations often need to be balanced with creative goals and technical feasibility. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that both content and website infrastructure support higher search rankings and a better user experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a search engine optimization (SEO) specialist?

To thrive as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialist, you need a solid grasp of keyword research, on-page and off-page optimization, analytics, and content strategy, often supported by a marketing degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and experience with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress are typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and coordinate with writers and web developers. These skills ensure improved website visibility, increased organic traffic, and measurable business growth in a competitive digital landscape.

What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website’s visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs), such as Google or Bing. It involves optimizing website content, structure, and technical elements to increase organic (unpaid) traffic. Job description

Digital/Brand Designer and Social Media Lead

Department: Marketing

Reports to: Digital Marketing Manager

About Nuvative

Nuvative is a fast‑growing technology company focused on making a real impact through continuing education, guidance, and innovation. We believe great work happens in an environment built on kindness, fairness, collaboration, and continuous growth. Our culture values initiative, integrity, and curiosity — and we’re committed to supporting both the professional and personal development of our team members.

Role Overview

We are looking for a creative, articulate, and detail-oriented Digital/Brand Designer and Social Media Lead to own and elevate our visual presence across all digital channels while also running our social media efforts. This role focuses heavily on creating high-performing, customer-first digital creative—specifically across websites, email campaigns, and social media platforms.

Beyond technical design skills, communication is key to this role. We seek an early-career professional who doesn't just execute, but can confidently present their work internally, explain the strategic rationale behind their choices, and actively process and implement collaborative feedback to improve execution and drive the best results.

What You’ll Do

Own Digital Design Across Channels

  • Web, Email and Social Focus: Concept, design, and produce high-quality visual assets that drive engagement across our websites, marketing/engagement emails, and organic and paid social media.
  • Brand Presentation and Rationale: Present design concepts to internal stakeholders, clearly articulating the "why" behind your visual strategy – how it fosters our brand and helps us reach business goals.
  • Feedback Integration: Actively participate in creative reviews, constructively processing feedback and translating critique into stronger design iterations.
  • Brand Consistency: Maintain and scale unified design systems, templates, and reusable assets to ensure a consistent look and feel across all digital customer touchpoints.

Cross-Functional Digital Collaboration

  • Web and UX/UI Support: Partner with the web team to create digital assets (icons, illustrations, layouts, and imagery) for our websites, ensuring consistent state-, city-, and product-specific pages, blog posts, one-off pages, and content in the secured/customer environment.
  • Email Marketing: Design templates and layouts and create compelling visuals for customer support (Operations), and engagement/retention (Marketing) emails, and newsletters.
  • SEO Optimization: Implement digital best practices for image file properties (sizing, compression, naming, tagging) to optimize site speed and discoverability.
  • Paid and Organic Social: Develop engaging image and motion ads for paid campaigns, site content for internal and external affiliates, and manage/schedule the organic social media calendar.

Performance and Iteration

  • Data-Driven Design: Incorporate performance analytics from internal and third-party platforms (GA4, Mouseflow, Mailchimp, etc.) to guide enhancements.
  • A/B Testing: Provide alternate creative variations for user testing on high-opportunity digital executions (site, email, social, etc.).

What We’re Looking For

  • 2–5+ years of digital design experience including graphics, data visualization/infographics, web sites, email, and social media
  • A strong portfolio showcasing a growing level of responsibility/ownership in digital design work (websites, email marketing, and social media campaigns)
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to ask relevant questions for project intake, advocate for needed time and resources, share to-dos and active projects in team meetings, and confidently present design work internally
  • Receptive collaboration including seeking out and welcoming all feedback and a strong desire to iterate and improve work through critique – while doing the same for team members
  • Proficiency in digital design tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Mailchimp, meta for Business, and more.
  • Familiarity with WordPress (and ideally Elementor) and a solid understanding of how visuals support usability and digital user experience (UX/UI).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines including weekly stand-ups in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with motion graphics, basic audio/video production, and editing for social media.
  • An established routine of using AI to help with ideation, research, positioning, and other tasks that speed the efficiency of the human work
  • Familiarity with online productivity, collaboration, and project management platforms (like ClickUp, Monday.com, Strety, etc.)

What Success Looks Like

  • Articulate Visual Leadership: Confidently creating and sharing work, leading to faster alignment and stronger collaborative outcomes.
  • Cohesive Digital Presence: Consistent, high-quality visual output across all websites, email templates, and social channels.
  • Data-Validated Improvements: Design choices that successfully improve user experience, email click-through rates, and social media engagement.
  • Optimized Web Performance: Visually stunning web assets that adhere to SEO best practices without sacrificing site speed.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

At Nuvative, your work directly contributes to how we operate, grow, and innovate. You’ll gain exposure to leadership, have a real voice in shaping compliance practices, and be supported as you continue to develop your expertise.

Our core values guide how we work every day:

  • Initiative: Approaching opportunities with confidence and enthusiasm
  • Persistence: Moving forward in the face of challenges
  • Teamwork: Succeeding together through collaboration
  • Respect: Considering others in our actions and decisions
  • Integrity: Doing the right thing, always

What We Offer

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • 401(k) plan
  • Voluntary life insurance and AD&D
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Ongoing learning, development, and certification support
