What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website’s visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs), such as Google or Bing. It involves optimizing website content, structure, and technical elements to increase organic (unpaid) traffic. SEO strategies include keyword research, on-page optimization, link building, and improving user experience. The goal is to make a website more attractive to search engines and users, ultimately driving more relevant visitors. Effective SEO helps businesses reach potential customers who are actively searching for related products or services.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a search engine optimization (SEO) specialist?

To thrive as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialist, you need a solid grasp of keyword research, on-page and off-page optimization, analytics, and content strategy, often supported by a marketing degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and experience with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress are typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and coordinate with writers and web developers. These skills ensure improved website visibility, increased organic traffic, and measurable business growth in a competitive digital landscape.

How does a search engine optimization (SEO) professional typically collaborate with content creators and web developers?

SEO professionals work closely with content creators to ensure that written materials are optimized for relevant keywords, user intent, and search engine guidelines. They also collaborate with web developers to implement technical improvements, such as site speed enhancements, structured data, and mobile optimization. Regular communication and teamwork are essential, as SEO recommendations often need to be balanced with creative goals and technical feasibility. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that both content and website infrastructure support higher search rankings and a better user experience.

Can you get a search engine optimization job with no experience?

Entry-level SEO jobs often do not require prior experience and may focus on skills like keyword research, content optimization, and familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics or SEMrush. Gaining certifications or building a portfolio through personal projects can improve chances of securing an SEO position without experience.

Is it hard to get a job in search engine optimization?

Getting a job in search engine optimization (SEO) can be competitive, but it is accessible with relevant skills such as keyword research, analytics, and familiarity with tools like Google Analytics and SEMrush. Growth Marketing Specialist

3-GIS

Huntsville, AL • On-site

Full-time

Posted 20 days ago

Key responsibilities

  • Run content-led search visibility, ABM, and lead generation programs daily in HubSpot and Salesforce.

  • Shape content and messaging to improve organic and AI-driven search visibility, including monitoring performance and flagging underperforming pages.

  • Support execution of ABM and lead generation campaigns, maintain target account lists, and assist with campaign analytics and reporting.

Job description

About the Role
As Growth Marketing Specialist, you make sure 3-GIS shows up with the right message wherever technical buyers are looking, whether that is a Google search, an AI Overview, or a ChatGPT answer. You then help turn that visibility into pipeline. You will run content-led search visibility, ABM, and lead generation programs daily in HubSpot and Salesforce.
3-GIS builds GIS-based software for telecom and utility network operators, a niche where buyers increasingly research through AI-driven search alongside traditional channels. You will shape the content and messaging that gets our product pages and resources found and cited, then turn that visibility into qualified leads and account engagement. What You'll Do
Content & Search Visibility (SEO/AEO/GEO)
  • Track content and messaging performance behind organic visibility. This includes monitoring topic authority, flagging underperforming pages that need a refresh, and checking that our product and use-case content directly answers the questions telecom and utility buyers are searching.
  • Write and structure content so it gets surfaced and cited by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot. Partner with the content team on formats like FAQs, comparisons, and clear definitions that these engines pull directly from.
  • Conduct keyword and topic research specific to how telecom and utility network operators search, and translate findings into content briefs for the content team.
  • Track and report organic and AI-search visibility, including rankings, citations, impressions, and click-through rate. Use Google Search Console, GA4, Semrush or Ahrefs, and emerging AI-visibility tools to gather this data.
  • Monitor competitor content and visibility across search and AI answer engines, and flag content gaps or opportunities for our own pages.
ABM & Lead Generation
  • Support execution of ABM and lead generation campaigns across email, web, and events, including campaigns tied to industry conferences events.
  • Help maintain the ideal customer profile (ICP) and target account lists using firmographic and technographic data specific to telecom and utility network operators.
  • Execute lead scoring and grading updates in HubSpot under guidance from marketing leadership, monitor score distribution, and flag when the model needs recalibration.
Analytics, Reporting & Operations
  • Track KPIs at every stage of the funnel using HubSpot properties (Original Source, lifecycle stage timestamps, lead score distribution, form-level conversion), and reconcile them against Salesforce lead status and disqualify reasons.
  • Apply asset scoring and DAM guidelines to campaign and content assets, flagging outdated or unapproved material before it goes into active campaigns.
  • Support campaign and funnel reporting, including MQL-to-SQL conversion, velocity, and pipeline contribution. Compile this reporting for marketing leadership review.
  • Assist with HubSpot-Salesforce data hygiene: field mapping, list segmentation, and workflow checks, escalating sync issues as they come up.
  • Run A/B tests on subject lines, landing pages, and forms, and document results into playbooks the team can reuse.
Events & Partner Marketing
  • Support event and partner-marketing execution, including campaign support for EMEA and US events.
What You'll Bring
  • 3-4 years of B2B marketing experience spanning SEO and demand generation or marketing operations.
  • Practical experience with content-led SEO and emerging AEO/GEO practices. This includes building topic authority, refreshing content for visibility, and writing in ways that get surfaced and cited by AI answer engines.
  • Working proficiency with HubSpot (workflows, lead scoring, list segmentation, reporting) and Salesforce (campaign tracking, reports and dashboards).
  • Familiarity with SEO and analytics tooling: Google Search Console, GA4, and Semrush or Ahrefs.
  • Understanding of ABM fundamentals: ICP development, firmographic segmentation, and account prioritization.
  • Strong analytical skills. You are comfortable pulling and interpreting funnel and search-visibility data and drawing clear conclusions from it.
  • Clear written communication and the ability to work cross-functionally with content, sales, and design.
Nice to Have
  • Experience marketing SaaS or technical products to telecom, utilities, engineering, or GIS audiences.
  • Exposure to AI search visibility tools.
  • Exposure to international or multi-region demand generation, including supporting EMEA campaigns alongside a North America program.
  • Familiarity with broadband and infrastructure policy trends (e.g., BEAD) that shape budget and buying cycles for telecom and utility customers.
