Can you get a search engine optimization job with no experience?

SEO professionals work closely with content creators to ensure that written materials are optimized for relevant keywords, user intent, and search engine guidelines. They also collaborate with web developers to implement technical improvements, such as site speed enhancements, structured data, and mobile optimization. Regular communication and teamwork are essential, as SEO recommendations often need to be balanced with creative goals and technical feasibility. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that both content and website infrastructure support higher search rankings and a better user experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a search engine optimization (SEO) specialist?

To thrive as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialist, you need a solid grasp of keyword research, on-page and off-page optimization, analytics, and content strategy, often supported by a marketing degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and experience with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress are typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and coordinate with writers and web developers. These skills ensure improved website visibility, increased organic traffic, and measurable business growth in a competitive digital landscape.

This leadership role combines strategic planning with active execution. BST manages marketing internally, without outside agencies, making this an ideal opportunity for a marketing leader who enjoys both leading a team and personally contributing to campaigns, content, digital marketing, and business growth initiatives.

This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of a growing portfolio of industrial technology brands. You will work closely with an experienced leadership team, lead a talented in-house marketing department, and play a significant role in supporting expansion through both organic growth and acquisitions.

If you enjoy building, leading, creating, and delivering measurable results in a hands-on environment, we invite you to apply.

ABOUT US:

  • We are a growing company looking for ambitious people who want to grow with us.
  • We are headquartered on the University of Nebraska's Innovation Campus where we partner with the university on emerging business strategies and are surrounded by talented people. There is a very cool coffee shop below our office.
  • Giving back to the community is something we love to do. Whether it's the United Way or our local Food Bank, part of our mission is helping those in need.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and execute annual marketing plans, budgets, and growth initiatives across multiple brands.
  • Align marketing strategies with company revenue goals, product positioning, and target markets.
  • Identify market opportunities, industry trends, and competitive advantages.
  • Support acquisition integration efforts and launch marketing programs for newly acquired businesses.
  • Measure and report marketing performance to executive leadership.

Team Development & Collaboration

  • Lead, mentor, and develop an in-house marketing team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with sales leaders, business unit managers, and subject matter experts across multiple locations.
  • Help scale marketing resources and capabilities as the organization grows.

Demand Generation & Digital Marketing

  • Drive lead generation through digital and traditional marketing channels.
  • Develop and optimize multi-channel campaigns, email marketing, and marketing automation programs.
  • Manage paid advertising, SEO initiatives, and website performance.
  • Utilize analytics and customer insights to improve campaign effectiveness and conversion rates.

Brand, Content & Communications

  • Oversee brand strategy and messaging across all business units.
  • Direct development of product literature, catalogs, videos, technical content, and marketing collateral.
  • Manage public relations, media outreach, and company communications.
  • Ensure consistent brand standards across all customer touchpoints.

Sales & Market Support

  • Partner closely with sales leadership to support business development efforts.
  • Develop tools, resources, and programs that improve lead generation and sales effectiveness.
  • Support product launches, distributor programs, trade shows, and customer events.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of progressive marketing experience.
  • 10+ years of marketing leadership experience.
  • Experience managing marketing programs across multiple brands, products, or business units.
  • Proven track record of generating measurable business growth through marketing initiatives.
  • Experience in B2B marketing within industrial manufacturing, agriculture, technology, automation, or related markets.
  • Strong communication, writing, presentation, and project management skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with BigCommerce or similar website/e-commerce platforms.
  • Experience with CRM and marketing automation platforms.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, SEO, paid advertising, LinkedIn Ads, and Google Ads.
  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, and brand integration initiatives.
  • Background in industrial automation, sensors, instrumentation, software, or agricultural technology markets.

The ideal candidate is:

  • Comfortable managing multiple brands and priorities.
  • Highly organized, analytical, and results-driven.
  • An effective leader who develops teams and drives accountability.
  • A creative problem solver with strong business acumen.
  • Passionate about using data, technology, and marketing innovation to drive growth.

Other Benefits:

  • Competitive wage based on education and experience.
  • Strong focus on celebrating success.
  • Employee focused environment.
  • National award-winning health plan plus dental, vision and life insurance benefits.
